Re: classic 13 25hp mercury prop recommendation
I can see that being the case. I think the 13 pitch is the standard prop for a 2 stroke 25 Mercury. It looks like you can get a 11 or 9 pitch for that outboard. It might do the trick but you'll be changing your prop a lot.

Re: Painting over TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer
I would check with manufacture on how long you can leave the boat in the water with a top side paint on the bottom. From my experience, it is a few days. I have bottom paint on the bottom of my boat and top side paint (Interlux Brightside) from the waterline up but one time my bilge pump failed on m...

Re: c.1960 13-footer with Johnson 40-HP
I installed the hydrofoil and it did help reduce the porpoising. I also like how it keeps the bow low when getting on plane. My top end speed seems to be about the same as i'm still around the same top end RPM's. My motor, by the way, is mounted a little higher up on the transom by 1 inch so I think...

Re: 1982 13' Sport Hull Weight
If there are no soft spots in the hull, (bottom and floor) and the transom is still solid, I personally would proceed. I'm sure a lot of older whalers have some water in them. On a positive note, your whaler will still be way lighter than a new one. I think new hulls weighs in at 640 lbs, dry weight.

Re: 1982 13' Sport Hull Weight
Depending on the model, hull weight should be around 320 to 410 lbs according to the CW reference. It looks like the Sport model is 320 lbs and the Limited is 410 lbs.

Thank you. My boat is far from perfect but does look ok from 20 feet --I laugh aloud--. I've actually never considered a hydrofoil. If the hydrofoil keeps the bow low, I'm sure it would also help for pulling water skiers. Maybe I should consider a hydrofoil. Thanks, Dave

This is how my 1967 13 footer sits with a 1973 Evinrude 50 HP -- around 180-lbs motor. The boat handles best with someone sitting up front. I used 60 grit with my orbit sander to remove the gel coat in those bad areas and when I got close to the fiberglass mat layer I switched to 80 or 120. The fiberglass mat is not very thick on these older boats so if you do decide to use a grinder just be cautious.

I would just be cautious about how much air pressure you force into the hull. You don't want to delaminate the fiberglass from the foam by doing so. I would let gravity do the trick and simply tilt the front of the trailer up so the water drains to the rear holes.

The CW reference below says weight of the 1959 model is between 250 to 275 so I'm guessing the 1972 model would be close to that weight. There are also diagrams of the embedded wood. All the best with your project.

Even though your mechanic said the compression is fine, I would double check the compression. Not a big deal. Worst case scenario is you just sand it off and re-paint the bottom the next year with bottom paint. If you paint the bottom of your boat with top side paint and you leave it more than 2 days in the lake, there is a good chance the paint will form small bubbles on the bottom of the boat. Just speaking from experience and not from a marketing brochure.
