Anecdotal comments both here and other sources indicate that smaller horsepower(20-75hp) engine impellers can last a lot longer than those on higher horsepower engines (90-300 hp). I think that's Bull$#!+ The thing to consider is the cost to benefit ratio of replacing the impeller say every 2-3 year...

You should search the archives on this site. A while back there was a member that went through the same process--successfully I might add. The additional horsepower resulted in much higher top speeds and necessitated the addition of some sort of skeg or fin on the bottom of the boat.

Waste plate might be a reference to the legend plate that is installed when there are "facilities" aboard. The plate generally describes the rules and procedures for use of said device in various waters.

Can't go wrong with the Mustang brand. For what it's worth get the hydrostatic release type. It's a few more bucks but you never have to worry about humidity and moisture setting one off. Not that there is much humidity and moisture in New Jersey ;-)

I forgot to mention that other boaters are required by law to give 300 feet of clearance to a boat displaying a dive flag on open water. The distance is reduced to 100 feet in a river, inlet, or channel.

A small note to add to Jimh's advise is to locate shrink tubing that has an adhesive on the inside. When that is not possible, buy some liquid tape (West Marine, others) and use that to totally waterproof your splices.
