Re: 2002 Mercury 40-HP Two-stroke-cycle

Bob, I think it could be pre-igniting off the carbon if there is a ton of it. The carbon could also be fouling the intake ports on the one cylinder.

If there are big chunks of carbon in there, it might be easier to just pull the head and have at it with a popsicle stick.

Re: 2002 Mercury 40-HP Two-stroke-cycle

That's a bit of a stumper, Bob. If the spark is OK, and it seems like it is, then it's got to be a fuel problem - but how a single-carb twin has problems only on one cylinder is beyond me. I would have said "reeds" but you've already checked them. You characterize this as a rough idle prob...

Note that the older style "unscrew to vent" caps are still available separately - and work as well as they always did. I'm all for being environmentally sound, but I've spilled far more gas with all of these newer style caps for different types of tanks than I ever did with the bad old ones.

Is the cracking just on the sides of the hull and transom? How about the underneath of the hull? My take on the cracks is that [they were caused because the boat] was just left out in the sun on a trailer for years, never protected, or never waxed. Impact damage usually produces more closely spaced ...

It's quite a bit of work to go to a center console - you need to build a rigging tunnel, for example. A cooler as the pilot seat is fine, as long as you're OK without a backrest - and the person you're sharing the seat with had better be a good friend. Regarding the general idea of turning a 15 into...

However, it looks like the crossmember just bolts on, so you could get another one, mount it on top of the side rails, and put another keel roller on it. Re: 150 Montauk 60-HP: Four-blade Propeller

Yes, it's a bit confusing. Up through 60 horses, Yamaha's "F" designation denotes the smaller gearcase, and "T" refers to the intermediate gearcase. At 70 horses, they only offer the intermediate gearcase, so the F70 has the same gearcase and gear ratio as the T60, while the F60 ...

Just based on my own experience with the F70, I would NOT recommend a 4-bladed prop. You want less blade area, not more, to allow the prop to spin up faster, into the motor's high RPM where it makes its power. I am very happy with the SCD3 on my F70 and I would recommend trying that first. A heavy b...

I am not really clear on why you want a four-blade propeller, as opposed to just dropping pitch to get better acceleration.
