The newer sport at 600lbs or so is a much better improvement over the classic but Phil is right. Bud had one with a 30hp, needs more power but Ok with light load.

Phil I have roughly 520-540lbs in the stern now, another 50 or so won't make a difference. My 200lbs will offset it unlike Dave ;) Plus moving battery under console will offset some. Twin 70's back in the 80's was roughly 520lbs plus one battery and they are at my expected 580lbs.

I had a 70 Suzuki that weighed 359-lbs on a jack plate and [the hull] handled the weight just fine. Any choice you make will be fine and yes, move the battery under the console on the port side.

Suzuki engines like to be mounted high.

I would raise the engine mounting height to two-holes-up or maybe three-holes-up.

With jackplates you can keep raising the engines until you go too high then lower them a 1/2inch. You will put more stress on the transom going deeper than if you raise them....hence the low speed due to drag which means stress.

I agree with Jim on top speed being around 42. Weight should not be a problem as I have run a heavy engine on a jackplate on a classic 17-footer--which everyone said was too heavy but it ran like a dream. Actually ran smoother than the 130-lbs-lighter setup due to stern weight.
