My previous boat was a 1999 Dauntless 18 powered by a two stroke, carbureted, 150hp Evinrude.
I would strongly recommend a 150hp engine. Mercury makes the lightest 150 four stroke, in case stern weight is a factor.

That [2001 160 DAUNTLESS] is a bull of a boat. Well made—but it has wood in the transom. Check the transom thru hull fittings that they are not leaking water into the transom.

You can also go to the Suzuki website and look at boat tests for that model engine. Though not exact it will give you a general guideline for what to expect performance wise with a similar hull.

The dealers I saw were not Boston Whaler dealers. They were dealers that sold mid-tier boats like Robalo, Tidewater, Sportsman. Boats of 20 to 30-feet are selling like hot cakes. Loan durations for 15 to 20-years make [a new boat purchase] easy for the Everyman.

Did you check the thru hull fittings, especially in the transom?
If they are plastic they are known to crack over time and cause water intrusion.
