Tools and materials needed to build a new interior for your 13 or 15 foot Whaler

This is for a small side console for either boat. I believe plans are available on this site. A few years ago I built a half dozen complete interiors for the 13 footer and sold them on this site. I had an original console for a 1976 13 footer that I took apart and used it for patterns. As far as I k...

Re: Power Saw

jimh [you must mean someone else, as I did not make this comment--jimh], your comment regarding Milwaukee circular saws. "Only draw back is if you are unfamiliar with using one it can seem awkward". Milwaukee makes a lot of circular saws. What one have you looked at? They make a lot of lef...

Re: Power Saw

jimh, The basic tool you need for building a deck or dock is a circular saw. The Makita 7 1/4" one mentioned above is the one that most professional carpenters use, and is the one I dropped of a roof a few years ago and wrecked, not a Ryobi that I think I mentioned. O f course you'll need a spe...

Re: Older Sport 15 Console

I don't think starboard is the proper material to build a console from, especially if I was building it for someone. I would probably end up eating it.

Re: Gel Coat Stains Keep Coming Back

Tape off a section that is stained, about one-inch-square. Sand off the stain using 500-grit wet or dry sandpaper. Then go to 100- grit, 150- grit, and then 2000-grit. The sanded spot should now look like the rest of the hull. Remove tape. Now see if the stain comes back in the sanded section. I dou...

Re: Older Sport 15 Console

If you want to go custom, I could replicate any part of my custom 1986 15ft. Whaler. I built a mold for the fiberglass part of the center console, and made patterns for the other parts, including the RPS seat. The console is about 3" taller than the original, and more comfortable to sit behind....

Re: 11 SUPER SPORT Steering

I am a little shocked at the lack of replies. Don't be shocked. That's what happens when you mess with a good thing. Cable and pulley steering is the perfect steering system for the 11- and 13-foot Whaler. It's simple, reliable, and just looks right. By the way, your old system is valuable. Hope yo...

Re: Power Saw

Back in the day, 50's, 60s, circular saws were also called cutoff saws, at least were I learned carpentry from- Long Island. I never saw the need for a modern "cut off " saw. Just stick a steel cutting blade in a "circular" saw. I have an old Ryobi 7 1/4" circular saw I use ...

Re: Power Saw

A cutoff saw is the same thing as a circular saw. The one I have is made by Hitachi. So is my cordless drill. A sawzall is a saw used in demo work. It has no use for building things. I suppose it will trim small tree branches though. My Milwaukee sawzall wore out years ago, so I now have one from Ha...

Re: Repair of Hairline Cracks in c.1970 Gel Coat

Hairline cracks or (spider cracks) can't be repaired. The only solution is to grind or sand them off the boat. I wouldn't do too much until I dried the hull out which may be impossible. A dry, bare 13 footer should weigh in the neighborhood of 280 lbs.

Re: Power Saw

As a lifetime professional carpenter, home builder and boat carpenter/remodeler, I would recommend three types of saws that will get you through most any carpentry job. A cutoff saw, a 10"chop saw and a table saw. With the exception of the cut off saw which should be a quality product and proba...

Almost gave up hope. Glad I thought to check in this morning. Your site is the link between Boston Whaler owners and makes owning a Boston Whaler more pleasurable.
