Re: Show Us Your Whaler

Dutchman- Yes, you absolutely can run on a plane in the Crooked River. There are some sections with cottages that you need to drop down to no-wake speeds. But there are two long sections with some sharp turns that you can run on plane. The other caveat is you need to drop down to no-wake speeds whe...

Must be a Boston Whaler

I was reading an article by Herb McCormick in the magazine Cruising World about a sailboat crossing the Atlantic this past summer. I ran into the following paragraph. The weirdest part of it happened when I was snoozing. Apparently, Logan and Billy were approached by a pair of dudes in a 25-foot cen...

Re: Reducing Engine Noise

I have done some with an old 25HP Evinrude 2S I use on one of my dingies. I used a self adhesive type insulating material used in the HVAC industry (for temperature insulating) This has a shiny chrome type aluminum foil (I doubt if you can find lead type) look to it and it did help. I did not use a ...

Re: Mercury 90 Fourstroke: Increasing Power

If it were as easy as an ECM, then everybody would buy the lower power model and change out the ECM No way Mercury or any other manufacturer will allow that to happen. You second post is probably more right with different cam.

That is a great distance, good for you guys.
Last one I did pulling the boat was 1,400 miles round trip and I was told never again.

Don & Elsa you are a lucky two with those 2 whalers. I didn't know that you could go full speed between Burt and Crooked Lake. Or is that a boo-boo?

Re: Gel Coat Stains Keep Coming Back

Stripper15 try the stuff offered by Aurora marine and "Ask the Skipper" I have used many of their offerings with good success. I used their waterline cleaner on one of my sailboats and it did what they said it would. The Boat Scrub also works great. Just a suggestion but ask them and they'...

Re: Show Us Your Whaler

Alan I'm jealous as that is on my bucket list. Never made it that far in my big boats but now that I have a trailer-able one I hope to make it up there.
Great picture and boat.

Re: Synthetic Aids to Navigation in Great Lakes

It is true that not everybody has an AIS receiver or transponder. I don't have one on my small boats. But any extra navigation aids are good. As for David'r comment of going from 30' to 30" , that's why we use depth-sounders and not trust a chart based on medium data, especially in a river wher...

Re: Recent trip to the Florida Keys

Thank you, padrefigure. The Florida Keys do look like a nice playground, which I'd love to check out. My problem is convincing the admiral to drive that far and go in water where there are sharks.

May I ask where you drove from?

Re: Burt Lake Speed Test

Sounds like you all had fun in that beautiful boating area. [HOOSIER's narrative] reminded me I should have an inexpensive spare propeller and wrench on board when going for trips on these larger inland lakes. I don't know which ramp you used, but, with Burt or Mullet both almost being 10 miles long...

Re: Fire On The Water

Jim thank you for the interesting article. These bulk carrier here on the fresh water lakes always amaze me. Some people don't know that we have these 1,000 ft ships roam these waters. I always give the the right of way no matter if the "rules" say I have the right of way and no matter if ...

Re: Capsize of M/Y BAADEN at Launch: NTSB Report

I would have stopped the launch when it was going in and it was listing as much as it did. The local news channel shows a picture of one of the under(or over depends how you look at it) rated dollies with 4 flat tires on one side under the boat. Sad for all parties involved but as mentioned better t...

Re: Saugatuck, Michigan, September 2015

Yes pete East winds are the best especially if you stay within a mile or so. I boat on Spring Lake too also a nice area as is White Lake (Whitehall) picked up my sailboat there 7 years ago and sailed it to South Haven in early May @ 35 deg F & 20 knots wind was cold and a blast 83 nm in 13 hrs. ...

Re: Saugatuck, Michigan, September 2015

Yeah, Jim, you are right. We always have more waves here then say north of Ludington--must be that always-blowing NW wind. Even east of the Door County peninsula is better, and Chicago to Milwaukee. Due to that, my wife made me sell the big cabin cruiser, and then the sailboat, as I would go sailing...

Saugatuck, Michigan, September 2015

A couple of weeks ago on September 27, 2015, I decided I needed some adventure. I had seen enough of the inland lakes here in southwest Michigan, and I decided the big lake would be a nice change of scenery. I drove up to the lovely towns of Saugatuck and Douglas, and I put in the boat at the ramp o...

Re: First Post On New Forum

Sorry I had to figure out that I had to re-register. (Sorry Jim for me being stupid)
But I'm on and can enjoy, seeing and talking about Boston Whalers during the next 5 to 6 months while the cold is here in Michigan.
