The Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering for 2019 has been awarded jointly to Bradford Parkinson, James Spilker, Hugo FrueHauf, and Richard Schwartz for their work on the Global Positioning System (GPS). This is a wonderful recognition of these engineers and their pioneering efforts 41-years ago to create the Global Position System.

Professor James Spiker has passed away, before he could attend the formal ceremony of the presentation of the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering this December. His wife Anna Marie Spiker attended the ceremony and accepted the award on his behalf. She also wrote a compelling biography of her late husband and his work in engineering. See
