Morgan Out Islander 41 Sailboat Dingy Davits

Postby drester228 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 4:22 pm

I just purchased a Morgan 41 Out Islander. I need help finding dinghy davits for the back of the sailboat that will hold a 1986 Whaler 13 with a 2016 Yamaha 30-HP engine. Thanks in advance for any help--Drester

You will probably find more readers who are familiar with the Morgan 41 Out Island sailboat on cruisersforum.com.

A 13 is going to be right at the limit. The beam at the stern relative to the length of the whaler is going to be awkward, and may not even able to properly structurally mount. The motor would have to come off too. (The weight is probably not the concern, given that's a full keeled boat.). I would get pieces of cardboard and and a 10' 2"x2" to make a template of how big the 13 is going to be back there. (just the footprint of the boat, whilst hanging) Tie yourself up astern to with the dinghy back there and see how it fits, and then hoist the cardboard up and you see how awkward the real thing is going to be like. I am not sure what kind sailing/cruising you do, but an oversized dinghy hung astern is a liability in larger seas.

I would just tow the 13 untill you find or decide something else. It's a lot of drag, but a full keeled boat is not going fast anyways.
