BW's Supercat

Postby mdplunkett » Wed Oct 05, 2016 6:18 pm

Hi,

For those interested, I found a review of Boston Whaler's Supercat (both the 17 and 20) written by Tony Chamberlain of the Boston Globe for its June 21, 1981, edition.

I know Jim made a deliberate decision when beginning CW to focus solely on the outboard Whalers, but I hope he doesn't mind this quick diversion. The date of the article appears to clear up some confusion about when BW owned and sold the Supercats. Previously I have seen that Whaler purchased and sold Supercat in 1984. This article, however, contradicts that timeline.

It still appears Whaler only sold the Supercat under its name for the year, as Joe Lawler recounted his decision to cut the line early in his tenure as President.

If anyone has additional information (or conflicting information), let me know. For what it's worth, the inflatable boats and Supercats receive only a few paragraphs in the book when discussing the early 1980s.

Regards,
Matthew Plunkett

Don McIntrye is a HUGE resource on the Boston Whaler Supercats. He raced a 20 up here in the Great Lakes and down in Florida too I believe.

If you are looking for info or first hand accounts, he is a good person to talk to.

Jeff nothing wrong with sailboats and I'm glad you will include them in the Whaler story.
I encountered the same with Chris-Crafts as they build some nice sail boats but everything was about the runabouts.
