Whaler Family Tree

Postby jklaiber1 » Wed Oct 19, 2016 8:11 pm

Hi All. What is your whaler progression? That is, what was your first whaler? And, then how have you progressed?

I started with a 13 and currently have a 18 Outrage. I am thinking about moving up again and it got me thinking about the whalers I have had and how and when I acquired them. To me it is kind of like hearing a song and it makes you think about that time in your life. When I see a model I have had or even one of the boats I had it makes me think about that time in my life. I guess this is kind of corny but thought it would be a good topic for discussion. Below are the whalers I have owned and some little tidbits about each.

13 Sport. Had a 50hp mercury. She was my first. --I laugh aloud--. Boat was over powered. Had lots of trouble with Engine.

17 Montauk. Found it about an hour from where I lived. Bought and kept it for a couple years and sold it for more then I paid for it. 2 years later I missed a chance to buy it back by about 15 minutes. Called the guy and he said he just sold it.

18 Rage. My only salt water boat. Sorry salt water guys but will never do that again.

18 Outrage. First one. Bought this one even though it was pretty rough. Bought it when I was going through whaler withdrawal. Sold it and broke even

20 Outrage. Bought it off of Gov deals. Nice boat but just didn't have time to fix it up the way I wanted to.

18 Outrage Current boat. Similar to my other 18 outrage but in much better condition. Kind of have the bug now to go bigger but still love my Outrage!

bought a 1968 13' Whaler about twenty years ago for my wife to get to the beach. Sold it to our boat hauler for his kids. Picked up an 18'Outrage from one of my customers before leaving Massachusetts for Florida. Ran the hell out of that boat for close to ten years. Sold it when I found a Dauntless 220 for the right price. Love the Dauntless. It is the right boat for the area I am in.

Hmmm, this maybe hard to do but here is a shot at it:
1977 - 15ft. sport with all the wood (new)w 50hp Merc. 2 stroke, sold in 1982.
1982 - 17ft. Motauk (new) w 70 Yamaha 2 stroke, traded in on 21 Outrage in 1986
1986 - 21ft. Revenge walkthru (new) w 150hp Yamaha 2 stroke, sold in 1989
2000 - 15ft. GLS I 1990? (used) w 60hp Evinrude 2 stroke, sold in 2003 to friend as his first Whaler, and gave him the bug... he has owned 5 since.
2003 - 15ft. GLS II (newish) w 60hp 4 stroke Yamaha, re-engined to 60hp E-tech in 2010, boat is supposedly one of the last three made in 2003 with original classic molds (commercial layup) before they where destroyed for new design. Bought from board member who decided to get a new 17 Sport made up instead of keeping this one after it was delivered. (still have)
2005 - 15ft. 1989 red Mischief w/ 70hp Yamaha 2 stroke, (used) gave to daughter and is now in Texas.
2007 - 15ft. 1987 center console with red trim (used) w 70hp 2 stroke Yamaha, bought by accident off of eBay when I put in asking bid to see what reserve was.... there wasn't one, and wound up with it since no one bid except me. Happy mistake as a same model that I was looking at had sold the day before for 2x what I paid. (still have) and swung 2003 60hp Yamaha to it from 15' center console.
2009 - 21ft. 1978 Revenge banana hull (very used) hurricane boat, took me 3 years to restore, hand wet sanded bottom paint off with palm sander, never again. Still not quite finished, didn't ever put windshield back on, maybe never will.... like it open, use as a dive boat and saltwater bay fisherman. (still have). put new 2008 140hp short shaft Johnson/zuki 4 stroke on it.

Yes I do like the 15ft. Classic hulls.... best one or two person boat ever made.

My first Whaler was a 1973 Sport 13 with a 40 hp Mercury, purchased and restored when I was about 20. I ran this boat in coastal water around Cape Cod, and it stayed in my family for many years. It was sold when my dad purchased a Dauntless 16 around 2002.

My next Whaler was a 1977 Montauk 17 with and 85 hp Johnson, 15hp Johnson kicker and the full Mills canvas set. I purchased this boat in Santa Cruz, CA and wet slipped it in Santa Cruz Harbor for several years. I sold this Whaler when I bought my Outrage.

My third Whaler, which I still own, is a 1989 Outrage 22 Cuddy, with a 200 hp ETEC and a 15 hp Mercury Kicker. I keep this boat in a wet slip in Santa Cruz Harbor.

Before my dad passed in February, he gave me his 1999 Dauntless 16 with a 90 hp Mercury. This boat remains at the family vacation home on Cape Cod.
