Re: Use of OUTRIGGERS on MONTAUK 17 boats

I got what looks like a pair of outriggers with my 1977 Montauk 17. I'm just starting my re-power and re-fit, and I haven't used them.

Does anyone use downriggers on a MONTAUK?

If so how,do you have them set up?

Thanks.

I have used Scotty downriggers with rail mounts for years fishing for salmon in the Puget Sound and at Seiku in the Straits of Juan De Fuca. Scotty has a website. The rail mounts can be seen at http://scotty.com/product/no-1027-rail-mount/. I like the rail mount because the board puts the downward pressure on the gunwale. I would not suggest using the stanchion mount. The stanchion mount would probably put too much pressure on the railing and stanchion.

My 17 is not a Montauk but is like those in the video from Campbell River, BC. As mentioned the rail mounts works well. I use 15lb balls and never feel like the rail will fail.
