170 Montauk Cover

Postby Clay » Thu Apr 06, 2017 3:05 pm

I have been researching covers for my new 170 MONTAUK boat. I would love some opinions from folks here. The Mills product looks great but is $1,100 now with the discount; Carver is $700; and National Boat Covers in CA IS $500. Any thoughts and experiences appreciated.

We have owned several Carver covers and are big fans. Excellent fit, well constructed, reasonably priced, color and material options are available and the covers are trailerable.

I have the Carver Sunbrella cover on my boat, it has withstood the South Florida elements 24/7/365 for 2 years and still looks brand new. I can't say enough good things about the cover and the company that stands behind their products. Carver is a top notch company with great products.
Current boat - 2018 270 Dauntless, Twin Mercury 225 Verado
Previous boat - 2013 190 Outrage, Mercury 150 EFI - SOLD

Yes, the Carver Sunbrella covers are very durable. For a 17 foot boat I recommend you include two vents with supports and a spare set of tie downs. The vents will help keep the moisture level and mold/mildew development to a minimum. The supports may be unnecessary but will help maintain a tight cover fit when the cover is very wet. Sunbrella as used by Carver is a relatively heavy cover. If you intend to tow with the cover installed the additional tie downs will allow you to use a tie down for every loop around the cover perimeter. If you don't plan to tow with the cover installed the added tie downs will be needed eventually. Although Sunbrella is very UV resistant the nylon tie downs are not. After a couple of years you'll want to use a little caution when putting tension on the tie downs. I've managed to break a couple and you can really hurt yourself. The first time it happened I broke a bone in my hand so I give some thought about where my hand may land when it happens again.

Thanks all. Great info. Not hearing much about the Mill cover--maybe [due to its] cost. The Carver [cover] seems to be well thought of. Waiting for some information about the Fisher [cover].

Probably [I] won't trailer with it in place. The [170 MONTUAK] came with a console cover and seat cover. The full one is for when the boat sits in my yard and when I put it in storage for the winter. Thanks again.

Clay I have been looking around for covers this weekend for my 1972 Cohasset II and Phil T pointed me to Carver on the other forum. There is a sale through tomorrow at a website called Bald Mike's. Looks like he places the order direct to Carver so the discount must just be where he is reducing his commission - but it's a better price than anywhere else I have seen this weekend. Have not ordered yet just browsing, going to call Carver tomorrow with a question or two.

Correction. I referred to the cover tie-downs as being made of nylon. They are made of a poly material. The web site has the details.

Carver Sun DURA custom. Fits perfect, lighter than Sunbrella and I think just as good. Separate cowling cover included.

I believe you've made a wise choice. I was also pleased with the after sale service received from Carver.
