Advice for bimini for Montauk 17
Advice for bimini for Montauk 17
I am seeking advice re choice of bimini and installation on 1991 Montauk.
Re: Advice for bimini for Montauk 17
The perfect match would be to find an OEM bimini. If not, Carver Industries sells bimini tops which will fit well on a Montauk. They sell various sizes with stainless steel (my preference) or aluminum rails. Several color options are available and Sunbrella is an excellent choice for the fabric. You can find them on-line at http://www.carvercovers.com. They make high quality gear.

For advice on OEM canvas, see the article in REFERENCE on the recommended or OEM suppliers. The URL is

On a classic MONTAUK, the usual choice of canvas is the FLYING TOP. Larger canvas tops were known as SUN TOPS.
The Wm. J. Mills & Co. canvas design for the FLYING TOP was quite unique. It was designed to not interfere with fishing from the aft cockpit. Most generic canvas tops will not incorporate the unique design of the Mills system.

Re: Advice for bimini for Montauk 17
I have had a Mills bimini on my 1988 Montauk for a number of years. It is an extremely well made product, easy to install and deploy. It has held up very well over the years. i always keep the cover on it when not in use. My suggestion would be to go for the Mills.

While many realize the high quality materials, craftsmanship and service of Mills, the $1000 can be out of reach for some owners.
Carver makes a good quality alternative at a lower price point.
If you select a non-Mills bimini, I highly recommend getting the slide rails and a size that stows on the outside the bow rails. The rails allow you two positions; Forward, to shade the driver/bow cooler passengers or aft, to shade the driver and RPS passengers facing aft.
