New owner, old boat

Postby akwalker » Tue Jul 04, 2017 6:50 pm

Hello to the forum. I just picked up what is supposedly a 1961 13-footer. The stencil number is 8778, and is located in the forward anchor locker. I'm planning on restoring the boat. Just wondering if anyone knew how to reference the stencil number and confirm the year. Any info I've found doesn't reference a 4 digit number.

Thanks in advance.

13' Boston Whaler hull stencil numbers 8500 through 10300 are 1963 model year.

Could you cite your source? The information you give is slightly different from my source--Boston Whaler.

jimh - my information comes from a very early Boston Whaler owners club newsletter. It has the same chart that you have in the CW 'Reference' section. Under Reference : "The 13 Foot Hull' - "Dimensions and History" "13' Hulls": - it goes on to list hull numbers by year, from #100 (1958) through 2B2700 (1973). It also has more information on other hulls. And a Boston Whaler Engineering Department drawing titled "H.I.N Number Sequence" for later models. Be glad to send you all the information I have.

If you have that data in electronic form I'd like to have a copy. I think I have the same documents, but I would like to see where the discrepancy arises.

Email would be the best way to send it. Thanks.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I did poke around the reference material for a few hours and did find where my hull number is in fact from 1963. Lots of great information on here, and it is very much appreciated.

AKWALKER--glad to have your participation. The goal of the website has been, for more than 15-years, to collect and organize information on the several topic areas it pursues, with classic Boston Whaler boats being the largest collection of information. The forum is great for interacting with other Boston Whaler owners and asking questions, but I think you will find that a great deal of information is archived and accessible in REFERENCE and in the archives of the "Old Forum" which preceded this one and had hundreds of thousands of articles posted.

Thanks again. So, more confusion. The only number I can find on the boat is the stenciled number in the anchor hatch, "8778". I went to NY DMV to register the boat with the registration the previous owner gave me. According to the clerk at the DMV, the HIN is DP477867. This was the number on the old registration.
Does this number correlate to anything, or could it have possibly been assigned by New York state sometime in the past?

The number cited above does not comply with the federal hull identification number or HIN format. Compare at

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/FAQ/#Q2

Perhaps the state created that number in their own format. A Boston Whaler boat made in 1963 never had a federal HIN--the Federal HIN was not invented until 1972. Please read the FAQ at

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) takes three forms in the Boston Whaler boat: the stenciled serial number, the metal tag, the embossed number. Numbering of the hull was initially voluntary but after November 1972 became a Federal requirement.

As suggested the format on the title is likely one of the state formats gradually created since 11-72. 30 years ago when titling/registering my MD titled/registered SN #95 Alcan boat in FL I was issued a FL HIN, required to make a metal plate and attach. The Format was unlike the Fed's or the OP's.
