Value of a 1978 Boston Whaler 4.6 Harpoon

Postby Buoy » Fri Jul 07, 2017 4:15 pm

Hi all. I found a 1978 4.6 Harpoon complete with all original rigging in good condition. NADA lists the 1978 5.1 Harpoon at an average retail of $2,100 but provides no values for the 4.6 Harpoon.

What's the approximate value of a 1978 4.6 Harpoon?

Thanks.

Most Boston Whaler owners consider NADA values to be very inaccurate and usually much too low. I suspect the small number of 4.6 Harpoons sold each year makes it virtually impossible to assign a market value to the boat.

If the boat is on a reliable trailer, has a sound hull and is ready to sail the value is the price at which it will sell. What is it worth to you to go sailing this weekend in an unsinkable boat?

I recently saw a beautiful HARPOON for sale for $2,500. It took enormous self-control to not immediately drive 200 miles and buy it. It was the 17-foot model, on a good trailer, with good sails.

Not sure it would bring that kind of money, but they are somewhat collectible / desirable. I'd think closer to $1200 for that boat with original rigging. That being said, paying $2k for that setup is good cost/fun value ratio!

I have a 1979 Harpoon 5.2 and would hope to get $2,000 for it. I have new sails/rigging, too.

Thanks for the replies, and now I see this other 1978 4.6 Harpoon which appears to be in very good condition for sale on Seattle CL with an asking price of $2,600.

I'll be purchasing one locally which needs a trailer and has a 4hp Evinrude that had been winterized but sitting for a couple of years.

I tried to get into sailing a few years ago with a Squall I had owned and found that it was to small for me so hopefully the 4.6 Harpoon will serve as a better learning platform.

Thanks vey much.

By the way, I think Continuous Wave is mostly power boat Whaler discussions. If it's ok with moderators.... you might consider looking up the Whaler Harpoon Yahoo group, as it's very active about Harpoon sailboats.

That being said, I personally think all Whaler owners should be welcome here, as we are all pretty loyal to the brand, and they made a fine sailboat back in the day.

Many years ago I decided to not compete with another fellow's website that was focused on the HARPOON boats, and I never tried to develop any special content here on those models. But feel free to discuss them here if you like. I don't have the other website URL handy. Last I looked it wasn't some "group" hosted sort of list; it was a real website.

This website may not be very active any more, but it will give any Harpoon owner a good overview and bit of history of the boat. Also there are a few links to the original brochures: http://www.ruach.net/Harpoon.shtml

The attached photos show one for sale that I ran across locally last weekend...it's not mine, and I don't know the owner ...no affiliation to me... but thought maybe you'd find it interesting. I took the pictures at the local credit union in Aiken, sc 29803. Hope this info is helpful.

Tack79 and Butch(jefinco) nail it on the head.
I love to have one like that too but $2,600 seems high. The pictures above show a nice boat and if the sail aren't lazy the OBO will warrant a lower ($1,500 or so cash) price to have that fun factor.
