1996 Outrage 22

Postby MPKehoe09 » Tue Jul 18, 2017 11:57 am

I came across a hull (only) for sale. The seller states the hull is a 1996 Outrage 22, but research doesn't show an Outrage 22 made in 1996. He states it's not the standard [1996] 21 Outrage, and that it's a rare Commercial version. Attached are some pictures that may help in identification. The current owner states that the boat has been dry docked (outside) for the last 15 years. He agrees with me that the whole boat likely needs to be stripped down, re-rigged. and re-wired.

Does anyone have any more info on this hull?

NADA Guides prices a [1996] 21 Outrage in good working order at $7,700.

What value would something like this have?

The Commercial and Government Products Division of Boston Whaler uses the recreational version of several models with changes for their commercial and government customers.

CGP used the Outrage 22 to produce a Guardian 22 model. While the hull is the same shape, this version has heavier fiberglass layups on the keel and other areas, different consoles, seats, rails and accessories. Buyers could select any engine brand.

As for resale, NADA is not accurate or helpful for determining value.

A search of the various boating for sale websites is a better guide.

Is there a motor, trailer, electronics? General condition? If no to all, I would estimate 3-4k for the hull.

Based on the pictures provided, the boat is certainly a classic Boston Whaler hull. The HIN can give you the year of manufacture and other details. (See more below.)

Generally you can contact Boston Whaler customer service with the HIN of a Boston Whaler boat, and they can give some more details about when it was made, who it was originally sold to, and other details (sometimes) about the original order.

Read the FAQ to learn how to identify Boston Whaler boats that were molded by Commercial and Government Products. See the section under the heading "Work Boat Hulls."

Because the hull was molded prior to c.2001, the federal HIN probably begins with the MIC of "BWC"; after c.2001 commercial hulls tended to have a HIN that began with a MIC of "WCG."

I cannot give an opinion on the value of a used boat based on a few pictures. Condition is paramount in determining value. For more advice about buying classic Boston Whaler boats as used boats, see

Buying Classic Boston Whaler Boats
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/buying.html

Also, the pictures show much more standard equipment than a description of "hull-only" would suggest. It looks like the boat is quite intact and has all the major components as manufactured. Perhaps you meant to say there was no outboard engine or trailer. But the boat looks like much more than a description of "hull-only" would suggest. Any assessment of value would have to be based on the boat, as it appears in the three images, to still have most major components from its original condition when sold initially as a new boat from Boston Whaler.

Boats with heavier laminate layup are often considered desirable models, as they are expected to have longer service lives--although I am sure any standard-layup Boston Whaler boat could go 50-years in service with any sort of care.

Could be the holy grail of the Classic Outrage 22, a more robust Commercial Products Division boat set up at the factory as a recreational Guardian 22 boat or maybe just a tired police boat redone. If the recreational stern couch is any indication of the condition of the rest of the hull, looks good so far. Other recreational bits seem to be the captains chairs, console rod holders with what appear to be factory cushions. The fiberglass gunwales are nice and it probably has the full across splashwell. Bimini looks to be all stainless and the bottom has no paint!

The hull appears to have commercial versions of the rubrail, under gunwale rod holders, center console and black pryout deck plates. It may also have the over abundance of screws holding down the fuel cavity deck cover.

Is there a solid dot aft of the Whaler logo on the side of the hull? If so, that is another indication of the Commercial Products Division.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

By "Hull Only" i meant no outboard or trailer.
All other original components seem to be there (rear bench seat, pedestal seats, console components, cushions, rails, etc.).

I am going to look at the boat this weekend, and hope to be able to find out more about it.

As mentioned, the boat definitely seems to be rigged for recreational use (cooler seat mount, rod holders, cushions, bench seat, etc.)

I just received this additional picture and it shows a heavy-duty, cast aluminum Freeman deck plate.
Does this further back up that the hull could have been molded by CGP, but outfitted for recreational use?

Thanks again,
Mike

I am on LI - saw this on CL.

Did you happen to see it last weekend? Do you have any pictures of the splashwell? The spalshwell can help date the hull.

It definitely started its life as a Guardian. The deck hatch and the G-18 or 20 console is proof.

So then this most likely is a 1996 - special order. I think 93 was the last year of the 22.

I am new to this site. I purchased this hull back in the Fall of 2017. I took the winter and completed a full refit, wires, pumps, lines, hoses. The hull is like new with little use, but, because of poor storage, the deck completed rotted under the top surface.

I launched her last week on the north shore of [Long Island]. This hull was a great find.

Because I could not secure a new Yamaha engine due to the shortage, I located a lightly used F250 3.3-liter, and it has fit the bill nicely. I have photos and will add more. Thanks.
