I need a new trailer for my [1967] Nauset. Suggest a good choice. [Thank you.]

WIthout knowing your location, the type of water to be encountered at launching, the type of launch ramps, the local regulations regarding trailer brakes, and your intentions for long-distance towing, it will be difficult to suggest a specific trailer brand, model, and configuration. I suggest the following elements be considered:

Check for local fabricators, as often trailers are available locally with reduced costs due to no shipping charges.

For a national-distribution brand, look at E-Z-Loader adjustable bunk trailers, and consider adding two keel rollers.

Many owners of classic Boston Whaler boats use amber-colored polyurethane rollers, galvanized steel brackets, and steel or stainless steel axles to provide keel supports. A typical brand of roller is STOLTZ. A typical re-seller is Eastern Marine Trailer Parts Super Store. At that same retailer, you can find galvanized brackets and other hardware.

If the trailer is to be used in saltwater, consider upgrades to all fasteners to be stainless steel.

If the trailer is to be used with very shallow launching ramps, consider a tilt-type trailer.

Do you plan to have brakes on the trailer? Local state regulations vary on use of mandatory brakes and may require brakes if the total trailer weight exceeds a particular weight limit.

If you plan for brakes, do you prefer drum or disc?

If you plan for brakes, do you prefer a surge actuator or an electrically controlled actuator?

If you plan for long-distance highway towing at interstate-highway speeds, consider using premium radial trailer tires, and avoid small-diameter wheels like 12-inch or 13-inch.

If the boat is to be launched off or loaded on the trailer in any sort of conditions where there will be wind, current, or wave action present, be certain to include tall guide posts on the back of the trailer to assist in holding the boat in position on the trailer.

If you towing vehicle has limited towing capacity, consider an aluminum-frame trailer to save weight.
