Replacement Value of Restored 1995 Sentry 19

Postby quickenberger » Tue Aug 01, 2017 11:01 am

For insurance purposes I am trying to get an idea of the replacement value for the 1995 19 Sentry that has been restored. There are not very many Sentry models out there but would like to get an idea of what y'all think. Here is the list of items on the boat:

Motorguide Xi5 24V bow mounted trolling motor
Furuno GP1870F fishfinder/charplotter with Airmar P66 transducer
Mercury 150 Optimax, 2006 (~1200 hours) with gen II cables and binnacle
Mercury 9.9 kicker 2002 year
Dualpro Professional series onboard charger (3 bank)
VHF radio
Hydraulic steering
automatic bilge pump
all new through-hulls
led nav lights
bocatech flush mount switches
new seats
ez-loader trailer with ez lube style spindles for quick grease maintenance
custom stainless oil reservoir and stainless battery trays
new rub rail
two big-jon 48" manual downriggers

Work done:
Coosa Board restored transom
new 55 gallon fuel tank with reed style sender
deck hatch underside re-fiberglassed and all screw holes sealed
all fiberglass nicks and dings and cracks properly fixed
new paint and floor non-skid
new trailer hubs, bearings, brakes, lights and wiring
internal foam checked throughout hull
custom built stainless steel seat mounts that fit on aluminum pedestal mounts

Attached are a few pics and there is still a few things left to do but hopefully y'all will get the idea. Thank you,

Since the Sentry model is no longer made, replacement value is very high given their scarcity.

Given your boat and your narrative and the photos, I would insure it for an agreed upon value of $15-20k.

I currently own a 1998 Boston Whaler Sentry 19', and previously owned a 1993 Boston Whaler Sentry 22'. In my opinion the Sentry model is a rare find and well worth waiting for. The cost of replacement is difficult to calculate. As mentioned before they are no longer manufactured by Brunswick the commercial division of Boston Whaler.

The primary costs of replacement is in the engines. For new four-stroke-power-cycle 150-HP and 9-HP engines you would be spending approximately $15,000.

The boat, trailer, trolling motor, electronics, and safety gear would add another $8,000 to that figure bringing the total to $23,000. That is what you could expect to pay for a boat that is equipped as yours is.

All the very best--Bill

Depending upon the insurer you choose you may need a surveyor to examine your Sentry and determine the replacement value for the insurer. This is often the case for older boats with high (for the age) stated values. If this is a requirement choose a surveyor carefully. Not all surveyors are familiar with the values of older Boston Whaler boats in general and of those that are restored in particular.

Thanks all. So far I have liked the way the Sentry handles. Cost of replacement is pretty difficult to determine when I look back at the work that went into getting it this far. That is why your input is valuable.
Thank you,

In reading the threads over the years about boat insurance, you can get a policy that has replacement value or agreed upon value.

Typically replacement values are easier to determine for new or used models that are plentiful in the marketplace.

I rarely read a positive story when it comes to the topic of Boston Whaler's and marine surveyors.

I would be wary of "just any" surveyor, thus my comment. The difficulty arises if an insurer requires an evaluation be done by a professional marine surveyor. Depending upon the value the owner wants the insurer to agree to a survey may not be required. I would expect problems when the insurer has a difficult time assigning the value the owner believes is accurate to a boat the age and size of which mitigates against such a high value.

When an owner assigns a value for the purposes of an agreed value policy he should forget his perceptions and emotional attachment and seek to use a value that can be backed up by at least a recent sale of two. If those are not available some other evidence may be needed. The professional opinion of a couple of boat brokers or dealers could help convince an insurer of a value.

These comments are hopefully not useful and the OP will be able to obtain an agreed value policy with no difficulty.

contact a known old/classic boat insurer such as Hagerty Classic out of Traverse City, MI they insure many classic boats and cars and know the value of limited run boats.

The best you can hope for is an insurance policy with an "agreed value." Of course, the higher the "agreed value" the higher will be the policy annual premium.

The "replacement cost" will be whatever Brunswick Commercial and Government Products would quote today for a similar 19-footer with similar accessories.

The notion that there are few of these boats does not mean that scarcity causes a rise in value.
