190 Outrage vs 170 Dauntless

Postby BeaconBoater » Sun Aug 06, 2017 2:53 pm

Would sincerely appreciate your opinions to help us decide between these two boats: 2004 Nantucket (Outrage) 190 vs a 2012 Dauntless 170. They are priced the same. We will use in a variety of ways.

The 19-foot Nantucket has a 2016 Mercury 150 HP 4-stroke with warranty, new Bluetop battery, new VHF radio, new stereo with Bluetooth, fish hawk, washdown pump and hose, automatic bilge; very well cared for. Excellent condition

The 17-foot Dauntless has all original 2012 equipment, including Mercury 90 HP FOURSTROKE, two batteries, Garmin, stereo, turn-on bilge pump, and sky pylon. No obvious problems. Good-to-excellent condition.

Deciding ASAP--Thanks for your thought.

Buy the 190 NANTUCKET-OUTRAGE; better engine (and under warranty), bigger boat, and sounds like a better deal. What's the asking price?

Another vote for 190 Nantucket--a way-better boat than a DAUNTLESS. Layout and space of 190 are phenomenal. Is that the one from Long Island for around $30,000?

The 170 Dauntless is a really nice boat. Everything I like about my 160 Dauntless, they kept or made better. The few things I don't like about my 160, they fixed. What's not to love?

That said, the 190 Nantucket-Outrage is more boat in every respect: performance with a 150 will be excellent; the boat has plenty of room; it handles beautifully; and it will take choppy water better than the 170. The only downside is that it's bigger and heavier (and in an apples-to-apples comparison, quite a bit more expensive); if storing and towing and burning 50-percent more fuel isn't a problem for you, I'd get the Nantucket.

Thanks. And we agreed with you all. Disappointed to report the Nantucket was sold, so our search continues.

BeaconBoater--the for-sale boat was a Whaler so you can't wait too long when she is priced right as everybody wants a Whaler. Good luck in your search and act quick.

The quick sale of the 190 OUTRAGE/NANTUCKET boat confirms it was probably the best choice. As DUTCH' notes, and as I have always advised, it is best to be ready to decide when you see a nice used Boston Whaler boat at a reasonable price, as they don't hang around for very long, especially at this time of the year.
