Location of foam and wood within hull

Postby Bigbear » Sun Sep 17, 2017 9:22 am

I may buy a used Montauk. I will tap the hull looking for changes in the sound.

Is the foam is located throughout the hull or only at and below the waterline?

[I am] also interested in the location of wood that may affect the sounding of the hull.

Thanks, Barry

Information of the sort you are seeking won't typically be found in a forum discussion. The present forum has only been in operation a couple of years. The present forum replaced an earlier version that operated for about 15 years. Several hundred thousand forum articles are archived, index, and available for searching and reading.

For basic information about Boston Whaler boats visit the REFERENCE section of the website. The REFERENCE section has many well-researched articles on various aspects of Boston Whaler boats.

To find the location of embedded reinforcements in a 16/17-foot hull, please see

The 16/17-foot Hull
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/

The main article has links to drawings that show the location of embedded wood or other material that act as reinforcements, varying with the year of manufacture of the hull.

To learn how a Boston Whaler UNIBOND hull is made, please read the article on the hull construction, also in REFERENCE at

In the patented Boston Whaler UNIBOND hull construction, all the interior space between the hull and the liner is filled completely with foam. You may also enjoy seeing how the modern production of Boston Whaler boats is accomplished. See my illustrated tour of the factory at

To search older material that is not located in the present forum, please visit the OLD FORUM main page at
