TOHATSU 250-HP--Very Unusual

Postby jimh » Mon Sep 18, 2017 7:31 am

I just came across the Tohatsu website showing their 250-HP engine. It is quite unusual--not the engine and not the website, but the inclusion of the MSRP for the engine. A Tohatsu BFT250AXA (25-inch standard rotation) has an MSRP of $25,863. To see the actual manufacturer's suggested retail price clearly listed on a publicly-accessible website is very nice. For some reason unknown to me, most outboard engine makers treat the MSRP of their engines like a closely guarded state secret.

As for the BFT250 engine, it is a big displacement 3.84-liter 60-degree V6 block and weighs 613-lbs in the lightest version (20-inch shaft). The engine is actually a HONDA BF250 made as a private label version for Tohatsu. Tohatsu and Honda struck a deal in 2014 to allow Tohatsu to market and sell private label Honda engines in 60, 75, 90, 115, 150, 200, 225 and 250-HP models. More at
