VENTURA with Sterndrive

Postby InVision » Sat Sep 23, 2017 4:12 am

This [now deleted FOR SALE listing] for a Boston Whaler looks like a Ventura with a sterndrive. How rare these are? Anyone ever seen one? The condition of sterndrive looks like a negative.--M

I have never seen a Boston Whaler boat similar to the one advertised.

Thanks for your comment. Since buying a 190 Nantucket I have been reading and internet surfing BW extensively. I have never seen this configuration. It might be one of a kind or even a customized, not a clue.

The most reasonable assumption regarding the unusual c.2003 boat with sterndrive: it was built to order by Commercial and Government Products for their customer.

My observation regarding popularity of sterndrive propulsion: sterndrives are more popular in colder freshwater boating areas than in saltwater or tropical water boating areas.

Using the description of "Utility" boat and the bow area layout indicates it is not a Ventura, rather a Commercial and Government Products Division (CGP) model.

I remember reading about one for sale a while back.....oh search engine.....

I never said [the boat under discussion] was a Ventura. I said it looked like a Ventura. [The seller in the linked advertisement said the boat was a Ventura hull--jimh]

The [HIN] is WCGxxxxxxx so it is a commercial vessel. Owner says "Coast Guard" vessel. EDIT: I meant Navy.

[Advertisement says "Navy"--jimh]

Sterndrive is the preferred name for the propulsion method used in the boat under discussion, and has been used throughout the website for more than 20-years.

Now with the mention of the boat under discussion having a HIN that begins with WCG we know the boat was made by the Whaler Commercial and Government Group. See my earlier comment suggesting that as the most reasonable assumption.

The title of the thread reflects the two major points of the initial article:
-- the boat has a sterndrive
-- the boat was said to be a Ventura hull (in the advertisement that is linked in the initial article)

The initial title for the thread made mention of the Coast Guard, but the linked advertisement made no mention of that agency. The seller claimed the boat was used by the Navy.

As I frequently do, the title was changed to best reflect the topic.

I agree, no worries. [The seller of the boat under discussion] y sent me the paperwork: boat was built in Edgewater in Aug 2002. I really liked the layout of this boat, but the saltwater has taken it toll on the 350 Mag and sterndrive. I believe it would be a great boat restored and a very unique Boston Whaler. Somebody will have a prize one day if it is restored, but it was more work than I wanted.

Thanks,

PHIL--your memory is very good. The boat in the thread in the archives is probably the same boat being discussed here, or perhaps a fleet mate.
