Not a Whaler in Sight

Postby jimp » Tue Oct 03, 2017 11:05 am

Didn't see a single Whaler this past weekend on a 40-mile cruise. Getting away from warmer Whaler weather and approaching interior heater cruising weather. Very few boats on the water. Never got above 45F.

The trip to Taku Harbor, 20-miles south of Juneau was very relaxing. Labor Day weekend was crowded at the float with over 20 boats moored overnight with lights on, music playing, and kids and dogs running around. This past weekend only four boats, all quiet (except for the water fall's muffled thunder 1/2 mile away, never heard it over Labor Day) and two well behaved kids. One couple had a small fire pit on the beach and invited us over for a beer. Enjoyable. That's what fall cruising is about. BBQ'd ribs on the grill and a bit of wine. Sadly, I forgot the Haagen-Dazs. Espar diesel heater kept the cabin in the high 50s, great for sleeping!

And dark! Tried to count all the stars in the sky, but gave up after several thousand, or maybe it was several million.

Jim I'm surprised you only got the cabin up to 50 deg on Wilbur. We used to boat here in West Michigan into early November when the temp didn't get above 45 either but the heater in the wooden Chris-Craft cruiser or in the plastic Irwin sailboat always would get it to mid sixties and we had to turn it down for sleeping when it was it the thirties outside.
Condensate was the only problem we had.
Just keep on cruising until the water is hard. Now it is different in my open CC Whaler as it gets to cold below 50 to enjoy a cruise, but we plan on a couple more fall cruises for the color changes.

Oh the heater got us up to high-60s... to warm! Dropped it down for the night.

Condensation was a problem Labor Day, but with more ports open and more heat, not as bad this time.

Jim I'm jealous I miss our past cabin cruiser(s) and their "luxury" but the admiral loves the little boat(Whaler). Now if it only had a head on it she would be in heaven.
Great pictures. Do you have one one or is that how you troll?

After camping on the 1990 Revenge 22-W.T for 19-years we really enjoy the comforts of the bigger boat. Little things like pushing a button and getting hot coffee 5-mutes later, or a hot shower, the BBQ grill, 3-burner propane stove for bacon, eggs, and toast in the morning, etc. But we did turn out some good food on the Revenge too!

Makes me hungry. Thanks and good pictures on the other forum (T&R) too.
