1989 Montauk Rub Rails

Is it common to see cracking next to rubber on 28 yo rub rails? Is this an easy fix? What is it a sign of?

Rub rails are not made of rubber.

Ok. Next to the black material that I thought was rubber. Is it common to se this after 28yrs?

Actually is rubber. The black part. I pulled this from the install manual of the OEM part.
“3 components that make up the rub rail - rigid receiver (hard plastic), a small flexible rubber “L” shaped trim, and a flexible rubber “insert
