c.1970 Outrage 19 Ride

Postby hargravesg » Sat Nov 04, 2017 5:35 pm

How does the ride of the 17-foot hull and the 1970's Outrage 19 compare?

BACKSTORY: I am looking for a Boston Whaler boat for quick fishing trips. I am not looking for a pristine example but one with a dry hull and reliable power.

I was originally going to buy another old style 15-footer--I've had one for over 20 years and keep it up in Maine. [The classic 15-footer] is still an absolute blast, but pricing on older 15-footer seems to have become particularly heated.

I started considering an older [1976 and newer] 17-footer, but the pricing on the 1973 to 1978 Outrage 19 seems more attractive in the current market, and the 1973 to 1978 Outrage 19 appears just as well suited for my needs.

[The boat I will be buying] will be used in Western Long Island Sound, primarily along Westchester and Connecticut shoreline for fishing along the shoreline. It will not be used for long trips and will rarely make the trip across the Sound--I did enough of that as a kid on a 13 getting pounded all over the place.

Thanks in advance--Gordon

The 19 Outrage will ride better than the 17. If not just for size.

The early OUTRAGE hulls like the 21 and 19 are not V-hulls. They are rounded bottom hulls, and they have a peculiar ride characteristic, particularly in downwind and following seas, where they ride like a surfboard. Going upwind and into head seas they are not particularly agile at splitting seas, and give a jarring ride that still tends to affect the opinion of how all Boston Whaler boats ride. These hulls are more like a Montauk 17 in their design, just longer. They are not like any moderate V-hull designs like the OUTRAGE 18, 20, 22, and 24 (or later called 25) hulls that followed later.
