First long trip in our 190 Nantucket - Observations

Postby InVision » Sun Nov 05, 2017 12:22 pm

My wife and I took our first long trip, about 30-miles, in the 190 Nantucket. All in all we still like the little Whaler. Observations:

--still can not get use to the 2-stroke Optimax seems noisy and somewhat smelly. Looking forward to re-power with 4-stroke.
--on the pre-flight noticed that there is no charcoal canister on over board fuel tank vent; the access below deck smelled slightly of tank fumes; nothing liquid and they cleared relatively fast once the floor hatch was open.
--at WOT was boat speed 45.3-MPH. Hard to keep on plane at 2600 rpm. Trim tabs would be helpful.
--we remembered to put plug in :-), but forgot to shut live well thru-hull and live well plug was in :-(. WOT with water slushing out live well not so good.
--actual draft with motor down was about 18 inches.
--nice day and the ride was very nice.
--need for a small anchor for fishing materialized. Anchor with 20-feet of chain is not so good for fishing.
--really miss our Trolling Motor like our last boat had.
--caught our limit in speckled trout, so all was very enjoyable.

The OptiMax engine is known for being quite noisy at lower speeds compared with other outboard engines; as engine speed increases, the difference between engine sound levels are less.

All V-hull boats with some deadrise at the stern will be hard to keep on plane at lower speeds. The hull lift with a moderate V-hull is not as great as boats with flatter bottoms, and V-hulls won't stay on plane at low speeds. But the moderate V-hull accounts for that "ride was very nice" outcome.

A trip of 30-miles is a good day on the water. Thanks for the report.
