2008 150 Montauk to 2018 170 Montauk

Going in to my 10th season with a 150 Montauk I purchased new in Feb 2009 and I'm considering an upgrade. Back when I bought the 150, it was a perfect little boat, but the family is growing and it's feeling a bit smaller these days. Going from 150 to 170 (2017) didn't seem like it was worth the cost of upgrade (had I bought the 170 like I probably should have in 2009, I would not be here writing this). Now the 2018 170 provides additional advantages over 2017 170 that folks have detailed previously (longer, wider, 115HP, built in fuel tank, forward fish box, under seat storage, probably forgetting something).

Wife wants to look at larger options for that kind of money. We want to take upwards of 6 or 7 on the boat at a time 4 adults and 2 or 3 kids (short ride to the sandbar for swimming and lounging). But I also want to trailer it for our vacation 400 miles away every year with my mid size SUV. Really don't want upgrade tow vehicle AND buy a new boat. Yeah, first world problems, I know.

I know this is all subjective, but just looking for some feedback on going from 150 Montauk that I've really loved and enjoyed for 10 years to something new with a few more options, the 2018 170 Montauk.

Thanks,
Smalltauk.

I would go with the upgrade to a 2018 170 Montauk, it’s a nice jump from the 150 Montauk but at the same time manageable enough for you to trailer it with your midsize SUV for 400 miles. The Montauk line from Whaler are versatile, efficient and easy to maintain, well worth their initial cost.

What about going up to the 190 Montauk? The weight difference is only about 800lbs between the 170 Montauk and the 190 Montauk.

The 190 is an admirable boat, but out of my price range. And finding a used Montauk of any size always seems like a daunting task.

I may use this season to test run some boats. That's one thing I did not do prior to buying the 150.

While a new model has the sizzle, that is a big $.

I would look at a Nantucket/Outrage 190 or even a used Montauk 210 for the number of people you want to carry.

Get used 2008-2012 190 Outrage . You can get them in 25-30 K range. Thats 70 K new. Deck space is amazing-ride excellent. IMHO it is better boat than any montauk .

You can claim the Outrage is better than any Montauk. While I'm sure that is your opinion not everyone shares that opinion. One could ask "better for what"? Certainly not for everything. Inshore and shallow water angling comes to mind as does water sports. I'll certainly concede the Outrage is generally superior to the Montauk for offshore fishing in less than ideal conditions. Other things, perhaps not so much.

Ok Butch-you are right - I will try to fix that.
In my humble opinion 190 is better riding boat than any size montauk .It also has higher gunwales and one of very few whaler models that has similar amount of deck space to very specious montauk.
After owning and trying all of above mention whaler models i believe its superior boat in calm or rough waters .There is absolutely zero doubts that if it would be my hard earned coin to spend wisely I would rather buy higher priced but used outrage hull .
Again my 0.2 cents opinion
I am certainly entitled to one
