Greetings. Why do some Newport models have a center console instead of a side console to starboard?
I am [seeking] a true center console that I can stand while underway at the helm.

A NEWPORT with a center console is called a NEWTAUK, a combination of a MONTAUK and a NEWPORT. There was probably an option to order one that way, although I don't think very many were made in that configuration.
If you are just looking for a 17-foot center console boat you will find there are many more MONTAUK boats available than NEWPORT boats with a center console.
