Look over a Montauk 170 near north Atlanta

Postby 2017reg » Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:43 am

I've been tire kicking the boat market for a reasonably priced center or dual console, inshore capable boat for my family (3 young kids). This will be my first boat. I have a friend urging me towards a Montauk 170 due to ease of handling, versatility and low maintenance (external fuel tank, etc).

I've read a lot of experience and opinions on forums, but I would like to actually look over a couple of these boats before I go looking for one to buy. Anyone in north Atlanta area interested in showing off their boat? I'm not far from Allatoona or Chattanooga area.

Of course if you are selling that will be ok also. I just have a Harley Softail that needs to sell first to fund the boat!

Thanks!

Have you looked for a local Boston Whaler dealer in the Atlanta area? There is virtually no difference between the current and past 170 Montauks, except for wear and tear and cost, of course.

Because you are new to boating you may be better off looking into an earlier Montauk 17. There are countless 17s available. Your local Craigs List offerings may have some examples you can look over. Every boat is for sale. Some are listed as the owners have a strong desire to sell. Others are not because the owners have no desire to sell. However, they are all available for the right price.

Go to a dealer to see a 170 Montauk. Maybe a dealer will be at an on-water site and have a boat in the water. Some dealers have special events in late summer when new models come out.

Our Atlanta area dealer doesn't seem to have this boat in inventory. Plus I would rather discuss with an owner vs a salesperson.

You can can read many prior discussions about the 170 Montauk here. Since it was introduced in 2002 it has been probably the most discussed newer Boston Whaler boat.

Here are some archived discussions for you to read while you are waiting for the motorcycle to sell:

I've been considering several models of used Boston Whaler boats in the 17 to 20-feet range. I would like to see some in person before I start serious shopping.

Will any owners in northwest Georgia show their boat to me?

I'll bring you a cheeseburger or milkshake or something for your time. I'm not looking for ride--just to see the layout in person and hear some likes and dislikes. I'll be in the $10,000 to $15,000 price range; new boats at the dealer aren't for me.
