New owner of a 1984 Sport 13

Postby djm3801 » Tue May 01, 2018 10:31 am

Greetings. I am fairly new to boats and brand-new to Boston Whaler boats. I just purchased a 1984 SPORT 13. Boston Whaler identified it as a 1984 SPORT 13 sold out in West Palm Beach with mahogany interior. The hull has never been painted. The original mahogany wood was painted at some point but original finish is visible under forward hatch.

I can barely see the old name "Miss Redco" which was removed. The only way I noticed it is that it is the only area of the hull that is less shiny. I googled "Miss Redco" and it was a 50-foot Hatteras that used to compete in yacht fishing tournaments in the 1980's. Since this 13-footer has a couple of non-factory bow fixtures, I am assuming this boat was used as a tender.

I judge the condition, other than the rub rail, to be very good. I am excited about restoring the wood to the original mahogany color and perhaps researching the boat's lineage. The last owner was a gentleman who owned it for six years and had to sell it due to his health. He used it in fresh water here in Sebastian, Florida.

This forum has been an excellent resource.

Boston Whaler boats that are 34-years-old will tend to have a few owner-added modifications. That circular deck plate in the bow area looks interesting, and was not an OEM element.

To have a 34-year-old-boat be in generally good condition and be seaworthy speaks to the nature of its design and construction. My 1992 Boston Whaler, made at the end of the classic era, will be joining the 30-year-old or older category in just four years. Tempus fugit

Yes - it is a learning curve for me. Never too old to learn or get excited over things. This will be a perfect boat for me to launch alone in the bass waters here in Florida or just take a ride on the intercoastal with the wife.
