Where to get Drain Plug

Postby dleopoldi914 » Sat May 19, 2018 9:12 pm

Where I can get the [transom drain] plug [for a 1983 MONTAUK].

I bought an 1983 Montauk. I love this boat. A plug for the transom is not holding and seems a little worn.

To buy a transom drain plug for a 1983 Boston Whaler MONTAUK, visit any ship store.

Ok. Cool. I can go to a West Marine with this plug and they will have it. Thanks.

Sorry for newbie questions; it’s my first boat and I have lots to learn.

Many WalMart stores have drain plugs, too, and at about half the price of West Marine. Get brass or stainless steel.

You want a drain plug that looks like this one:

Get the proper size. There are two common diameters. With the handle in-line with the drain, you can rotate the handle to thread the bottom plate onto the rubber plug to be tighter or looser. Adjust the threading so when you pull the lever to be at right-angle to the plug the rubber is compressed nicely and seals the drain. Wet the rubber before installing it. Clean the drain of any debris or residue so the rubber seal can work properly.

Another choice in a drain plug is one with a T-handle:

These fit into tight places more easily. I prefer this type.

Read the owner's manual about drains. If you did not get a printed copy of the owner's manual, you my find my HTML version of the Boston Whaler owner's manual for smaller classic hulls will be informative. VIsit the REFERENCE section to view:

There may be nothing wrong with the plug you have, maybe you just need to tighten it the way Jim said.

I prefer the T-Handle type - a lot easier to use if you have a bilge pump in the Montauk sump area.
WalMart has an Attwood Stainless Steel T-handle type drain plug for $4.42.

By the way, on a Boston Whaler you generally do not put plugs into the "transom drain"--at least not on the outside of the transom. The lowest drain on the transom is the outlet of the cockpit sump, and it is normally never plugged at the transom. The engine splash well drains are normally never plugged, either. Read the owner's manual for guidance. Follow the link I posted earlier.
