With three grandkids under age five and always boating on flat inland water, I am thinking about getting an early 1990's SL [16] that is super clean and has a ski pylon. Are they still the "black sheep" of the Whaler line?

An SL [16] would be an good fit for my use.

While not produced in large numbers from 1991-1994, owners of a 16SL really appreciate it for its features. Some say the hull is a pre-cursor to the 2003 Montauk 170 I design.

At one time there were a few vocal Boston Whaler enthusiasts who never saw any Boston Whaler made after Bob Dougherty was pushed out as head designer as a proper Boston Whaler, but that sort of thinking has diminished over time. Now post-Dougherty boats are seen and judged without as much prejudice against them because they weren’t the same boat made in the 1980’s or earlier.

I had a 16SL years ago and I am sorry I sold it. The 16SL boat came out of Arizona, and I brought it up to Utah to use with our children when they were smaller.

For a 16-foot boat, the in-deck storage was very nice, passenger console had deep storage, and seating was great for smaller children. I changed out the twin carry-on tanks for a single Tempo 20-gallon tank that was long and rectangular in shape and fit perfectly.

Not a big rough-water boat, but for pulling tubes or a wakeboard it was great

The 16 SPORT LIMITED was easy to wash--as it was lower--easy to get in, and I could take it off the hitch and roll it into the garage.

Nice little Whaler. Wish I still had her for some events
