9 TENDER

Postby Mattwarner » Sun Nov 25, 2018 3:48 am

I have the chance to make an offer on a little 9-foot Boston WHaler (hull only) in average condition and needing a bit of TLC. I live in the UK and have never seen another one, but equally I don't think this would be a desirable model.

I have two kids (ages 6 and 8) and a 1988 Long Shaft Johnson 6-HP which i think would work other than assuming these are a short shaft hull.

To give me an idea of value, what would [a 9-foot Boston Whaler] be worth in the USA?

Are they usable?

I would be using it only for inland harbour and river use and to replace a 9-foot inflatable we have been taking out on my Montauk and inflating to rowing around. But kids are ready for a step up and learn how to use a motor.

I believe that the 9 TENDER used a short shaft engine and was rated for only 5-HP. See

As for price or value, it always depends on condition. In fair condition, I would expect that a 9 TENDER would sell for less than $1,000, perhaps much less. I would expect that the boat would have the original mahogany wood plank seats. There have been 9 TENDER boats listed recently at very high prices, $2000 to $4000. I doubt there is much interest at those prices.

I can't offer any first-hand advice about handling. Search the archives to find more comments. Here are three older threads, with some rather negative comments about the 9 TENDER:

This link will find more.

I suggest you ask the seller for a sea trial with the boat before you commit to buying it.

I've offered the guy £300 (about $400) including the trailer and will see how that goes. The 9 TENDER is not in great condition,
