Igloo Sportsman Cooler 55-Quart

Postby ferdinando » Sat Feb 06, 2016 4:50 pm

I just purchased an Igloo 55-quart Sportsman cooler, which seems to be a very heavy duty cooler. I saw it for $399 at West Marine and bought it for $210 on Amazon. It almost looks like the same size cooler that my 190 came with from the factory.

Has anybody experience with this cooler, good or bad? I intend to size it this weekend in the boat, and am just hoping it fits.

I'm thinking of replacing my standard Igloo 72qt with the Igloo Sportsman 55 since the dimensions are so close. It looks like I'd have to add snaps for the cushion. Are you happy with yours?

Don't even think about paying that price for an igloo cooler. Spend half the price and get a better cooler in a Coleman.

The Sportsman 55 is currently priced $199.98 at Sams Club. That's a great price for a comparable cooler. I've also looked at the Coleman Esky series but their dimension are a little rounded and oddly shaped.

My Igloo cooler is great, as mentioned it's size is comparable to the standard 72 qt igloo that came with my 190. Coleman coolers
do not hold the cold like an Igloo does. I have to make some minor adjustments so that my new Igloo will fit where my 72 qt cooler
sat. Will be getting this done this weekend. I also had a custom shop copy my 72 qt cushion for the new cooler so it matches my boat cushions.

I am very happy with this new set up and the new cooler held 2 bags of ice for almost 4 days. Besides it's a much stronger seat then the 72.

All in all I think this was a great upgrade and the price compared to Theft Marine was a solid $200 bucks less!!!

Ferdinando, would love to see pics of the cooler with the new cushion. How much did they charge to upholster/copy the Whaler cushion?

John:

I will try and get a photo this weekend and see if I can post it as my computer skills are somewhat lacking.
Ref cost for the cushion, it was $75 bucks.

I have read the recent threads about changing from the typical Igloo Marine 94 qt cooler to brand X or brand Y and am wondering....why? In past years any discussion would lead back to the Igloo whereas recently its shifting away.

Are the $300 coolers that much better than the $130 Igloo?
Does the fact that a new OEM cushion from Anderson's or replacement from Halls (closed years ago) will not fit not bother people?
Can the standard cooler cleats be re-used for the Yeti or Sportsman?

The trouble with that 55 quart cooler is that it's too small for any catch. We only use them for bait fish here on the Southern Coast;=)

Butch you are correct however when I fish I change out the 55 qt cooler for a 162 qt Igloo cooler. The 55 is perfect for me when I just go out for a day with the wife and maybe another couple. Works great for me and does hold the cold more then a regular Igloo.

I bought one to replace the front-of-the-console cooler seat on my Wellcraft...its slightly larger than the 72qt it replaced so I had to move the cooler chocks a little bit. Its a nice cooler for the price and much stronger for use as a seat.

COSTCO is carrying them too now...except COSTCO's are desert tan colored instead of the white ones Sam's has...

Not for my Wellcraft, but they might look great in front of the console of a desert tan whaler...
