2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60

Postby frontier » Sun Mar 17, 2019 7:15 pm

I just saw the new 2019 Tohatsu outboard engine brochure; Tohatsu's new 60-HP outboard weighs just 217-lbs--and looks nice too. Wow.

Mercury and Yamaha 60's are 247-lbs.
Evinrude E-TEC 60 is 240-lbs.
Honda 60 HP is 239-lbs.

[Weight reduction in outboard engines] can be done.

Now, if all [manufacturers] could just get their new 90-HP outboards to lose 100-lbs.

[Later in the discussion the engine under discussion was clarified to be the Tohatsu Model MFS60--jimh]

[The 2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60 engine] seems to be the same as the 50-HP version. The same weight [suggests that the manufacturer, Tohatsu] must have squeezed an extra 10-HP [from the same engine].

How [will a 2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60] perform on a classic Montauk?

[The performance is] obviously not going to be "fast," but I would consider [MONTAUK 17 with a 60-HP] would hit 35-MPH. The [MONTAUK 17 with 60] would be a nice low weight, and probably a decent saving over a Yamaha F70.

A "decent savings" in what respect?
In weight?
In money?

According to the TOHATSU website, their 60-HP model BFT60 weighs 243-lbs. Cf.: https://www.tohatsu.com/outboards/60_4st.html

I am confused by the citation of a TOHATSU 60-HP that weighs 217-lbs. Where do we find the specification for this engine and what is its model designator?

Is the new (but not well identified) TOHATSU 60-HP engine a two-stroke low pressure direct injection (TLDI) model or a four-stroke-power-cycle model?

Sorry I was referring to the new Tohatsu 60hp. I have a 90 Tohatsu 2 stroke which is a 1995 and running great, but thinking its on borrowed time. Here in the UK the Yamaha F70 is expensive at over $10,500 plus rigging with a three-year warranty, the current 50-HP Tohatsu is around $7,000 plus rigging with a seven-year warranty. Assuming a slight price hike for the extra 10HP [the new Tohatsu 60] maybe a good package for those happy with running at cruising speed.

Re: 2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60 and Possible Mercury version

Postby jimh » Mon Mar 18, 2019 9:36 am

Since Tohatsu's biggest customer is Brunswick, which buys a lot of smaller horsepower engines from Tohatsu and rebadges them as Mercury, I wonder if this (yet to be seen) lighter 60-HP engine will be coming out with a Mercury decal on the cowling. It so, then maybe Boston Whaler will be using them on smaller boats.

Where can we see this new engine?

The deleted picture of text said:

NEW FOR 2019 THE 60HP IS THE LIGHTEST IN IT'S (sic) CLASS.

When it comes to our engineering, the MFS60 has been created to better fit our customers with simple architecture, easy to use interface, ultra low emission, and absolute quality.

LEGACY Passed down from the MFS50/40, the new MFS60 now carries the light weight title with starting weight at 217-lbs.

REFINED EXTERIOR Contrasting Tohatsu Aquamarine Blue, the Beluga White[,] and mirror decals gives (sic) the MFS60 a sleeker look to best fit your boating needs.

SIMPLE ARCHITECTURE Minimal design change from it's (sic) predecessor (MFS50/40) keeps the new 60HP simple and easy to maintain.

Now we finally know the model designator for the new engine: 2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60

Re: 2019 Tohatsu 60-HP Model MFS60 Specifications

Postby jimh » Mon Mar 18, 2019 11:24 am

If the new Tohatsue engine now identified as MFS60 is a derivative of the previous model MFS50, then we may assume the MFS60 might be a four-stroke-power-cycle three-cylinder 886-cc displacement engine. Or, perhaps the displacement was increased slightly to get the additional 10-HP.

The MFS50 in short-shaft version weighs only 209-lbs. More specifications and information about the predecessor MDS50/40 engine at
https://www.tohatsu.com/outboards/50_4st.html

I don't find any information about the MFS60 on the Tohatsu website.

A MFS60 probably won't perform as well on a classic MONTAUK 17 as an Evinrude E-TEC 90. The E-TEC 90 has been a very popular choice for re-power of classic MONTAUK 17 boats.

I'd agree with Jim on this and think he was being a little elusive in his response since a 90 Etec will trump a 60 Tohatsu. There is no way a 60hp 4 stroke will pack the torque or horsepower of a 90 2 stroke. Even when comparing the same horsepower, a 2 stroke will always have and edge in torque over a 4 stroke in the most important RPM range (low to mid) of getting a boat on plane or towing a skier.

The Tahatsu 60 will work on a 17' Whaler, but you are at 60% of the rated power, so it will not perform as well as one with the rated horsepower. This applies to every Whaler and boat made.

One experienced MONTAUK owner has suggested that engine weight should be limited; his MONTAUK boat's bow rose and the whole boat flipped over in very high wind conditions (with winds above 60-MPH), and he felt too much engine weight on the transom aggravated the problem. He had a SUZUKI DF70 four-stroke at the time. This fellow cautioned that engine weight ought to be kept low. See my account of his narrative in the archives:
