MONTAUK 17: Shallow Water Anchor, Powered Anchor

Postby River1123 » Thu Mar 28, 2019 9:00 pm

Give me suggestions [for a powered anchor of the type called a shallow water anchor and later clarified to use in water about two-feet to five-feet deep and suitable] for a 170 Montauk [later clarified to be a classic MONTAUK 17].

I use a small plow anchor in sand or mud at those depths plus the anchor performs well in water of about fifty feet. I haven't tried it in deeper water.

There have been one or two threads about powered anchors, specifically Power Pole brands.

While I did not find any information showing an installation on a Montauk 170, there is one installation on a 220 Outrage. Photo links are in the thread.

Note the installation included a offset bracket.

This installation approach may be appropriate (and easier) on a Montauk 170 given its hull construction.

Warning - these units run $2,000 and higher.

I have chosen a Micropole that clamps on the back transom. I will update the forum as I customize the boat. I think anglers on the forum will find the results interesting. This is an original Texas boat that loves to fish.

The Micro Pole is offered by Power Pole. In reviewing the installation and owners guide, http://www.power-pole.com/manuals/download/manual/id/28/ I would proffer the adapter plate (e.g. http://www.power-pole.com/plate-kit-motor-2-aft-3-rise-port is the appropriate installation approach. It will be the stronger approach and does not involve drilling additional holes or damaging the transom.

Follow up: the power-pole mini did not work well for me with the transom clamps. A regular fiberglass stick has been working great with a rope.
