I am sure to have water [collecting in the areas shown in Figures 1 and 2] is normal, but it is frustrating.

What is this area called?




Is there any way to [stop water from collecting in the unnamed areas shown]?

[The unnamed area shown above in Figure 1and 2] is a great place for a bilge pump. When I owned a Montauk I installed a 500 GPH pump and ran a hose over the transom.

Water collects in low areas. In a MONTAUK 17 hull there is a COCKPIT SUMP, a low area INTENTIONALLY designed to collect water.

My best guess regarding your images: they show the cockpit sump of a MONTAUK 17.

Since the COCKPIT SUMP is a low area INTENTIONALLY DESIGN TO COLLECT WATER, there is not a simple or easy or quick way to stop water from collecting there because it is a low area designed to collect water.

Should I put the plug on the outside of the transom?

As can be inferred from the guide, though-hull drains are to be plugged from inside the boat, with the exception of a transom drain on certain 17-foot hulls where access to the cockpit sump is prevented by an overlay deck or covering.

Check your bailing plug brass tube. Based on the pic you provided, it doesn't appear to be sitting square against the gelcoat and they are a point of failure in Whalers. They can be replaced and if your's is compromised, then it could allow water into the transom area foam and transom core.

I've replaced many of them on the Whalers I've owned over the years.

On 13, 15 and 17 models owned, after replacing the brass tube, I installed a small Rule bilge pump to dewater the boat and then put a plug both on the inside and outside of the brass tube to prevent salt water from entering and causing another failure.

Lots of Montauk boats used plastic drain tubes. I don't know the advantages or disadvantages.

I got a replacement [drain tube] from Twin Cities Marine in Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

If the boat lives under a cover or inside when not in use, then you can use an old towel to get out the water before storage.
