Outrage 17 II v. Dauntless 16

Postby Harlemsgt » Sat May 11, 2019 10:00 am

People who have experience with both an OUTRAGE 17 II and a DAUNTLESS 16: tell me all the advantages and disadvantages of each.

I am in the market again for a new boat. I am trying to decide between a Outrage 17 II or a Dauntless 16. I am leaning towards the Dauntless. The DAUNTLESS 16 has more seating, and I tend to do more family activities than fishing.

I had a 1999 Dauntless 18 and now have a 2003 190 Nantucket. Though not an exact match to your comparison; it’s somewhat similar.

The 1999 Dauntless 18 had more interior room and storage space. The 2003 190 Nantucket rides better in following seas.

Here in NW Florida I tried a Dauntless, Montauk and Outrage. Here we have a large saltwater bay and it gets white caps a bunch during mid day. The ride in the Montauk 19 was the worst. The Dauntless 200/cc was some better but the Outrage 190 was by far the best. The storage room on the Dauntless is the better of the three. I ended up with a 2004 Nantucket 190 which is basically the same mold as the 2019 Outrage 190.

Since I am not familiar with the big northern water so I am not sure I have a recommendation for you. I must say not dealing with the saltwater seems ideal. I re-powered our Nantucket with an ETEC G2 which is made for the harsh salt environments.

Good Luck on you search.

I can't address the Outrage but we owned a 16 Dauntless with a 115 HP engine for ten years. We loved the Dauntless but I had to have a larger 190 Montauk so we sold the Dauntless. I often regret that decision. The Montauk is a better boat for fishing but not much else.

The Dauntless has, I believe, a 45 gallon fuel capacity so it has very good range and can be run virtually all day without requiring a refuel. With the optional aft quarter seats it will sit five comfortably including one on the cooler seat. With the optional bow cushion two additional passengers can also sit comfortably. The console is a nice size and accommodates dual batteries easily and has storage space left over. The RPS storage is roomy for additional storage. The Dauntless is very easy to handle at the launch ramp as it is a 16 foot boat.

There is a negative with the Dauntless. The boat is heavy in the stern. For that reason I advise a 115 HP engine vs the more often used 90 HP engine. The 90 will handle the job but the 115 is better suited for the boat. A four blade propeller provided the best performance for us.

The Dauntless can handle rough seas but it is only 16 feet long and a semi-v hull design. The boat is well constructed so can take just about anything but the human body is more limited. For bay and smaller waters it is ideal. For near shore and off shore use it is happier on better days. On a good day I would not hesitate to take it 20 miles off shore.

For all the virtues of the Dauntless I would select the Outrage if our primary use would be off shore fishing.

H -

Where are you planning on using the boat?

Lakes, rivers, protected harbors, near coast, open ocean, offshore?

I have seen literature back a number of years ago the aptly described the Outrage series is a "offshore" boat. The Dauntless series is for near shore.

One can do all the water types and the other a few.

Sorry for the delay. I have been extremely busy and forgot about this thread. I have decided on the Dauntless 16 due to the seating capabilities, but I have either missed any nice clean boats.

The boats I have found still for sale have a lot to be desired. I plan on using the boat mostly on intracoastal water ways and occasionally on a lake.

What years was 16 Dauntless made?

The Dauntless 16 was produced for the model years 1999 - 2006. The model name was changed to Dauntless 160 in 2002 for marketing reasons.

For a quick history of the few changes made to the Dauntless 160 over its production lifetime, see http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum8/HTML/002732.html. As far as I know there were no subsequent factory changes over the rest of the production run, although the mix of available outboards changed somewhat over time based on the current Mercury product lineup. 90 and 115 HP engines were both offered throughout the production run.

The only change of consequence was the notch in the lower transom, since with heavier 4-stroke engines and a naturally stern-heavy boat that extra half-cubic-foot or so of displacement can help.

I have a number of threads of changes that I've made to my 160 since I bought it new in 2003, but to summarize the very best change was adding trim tabs, with hydraulic steering a close second.
