Alaskan Squall - 17 years of drying out

The drying-out process started in 2002 when I found a 1968 Boston Whaler Squall being used as a mailbox in Thane, Alaska, a bit southeast of Juneau. I always liked the Squall since I first saw one in the 1960s. So for $50 I loaded this waterlogged project into my truck. See

In 2002 I removed all the woodwork and fittings. The woodwork got seven coats of varnish and the fittings shined up. The varnish still looks good after 17-years sitting in a locker in the garage.

Also, since 2002 I've weighed the Squall to get her down to weight so I can repair her and take her out again.

What is stock weight? 125-lbs?

You are almost there and probably close enough.

I bought a 1969 SQUALL at a garage sale for $100. I sold the rudder for $125 and the centerboard and handle for $100, so I have $125 budget for my freebie. I got a TACO rubrail at a garage sale for $5. New decals from Janis for small change. I just need to sand, paint, and lineX the interior—yes it is that bad—but the hull isnot a bit waterlogged so a good project one day.

Been around 11-years drying so far, so the hull is catching up your 17-years.

New SQUAL hull weighs about 125-lbs.

I likely should have added the weight of seats and hardware back in, maybe another 10 to 12-lbs, so likely closer to 185-lbs.

So 185 - 125 = 60-lbs—a smaller kid. Anyway, I'll keep drying for a few more years.

To find any success stories on waterlogged Squalls is hard.

Dave--the boat is just sitting there and drying with lots of holes. Sits between the furnace, water heater, and baseboard heat.

The hull of the mailbox Squall has shed about 313-lbs of weight, which we can assume was water. At 8.34-lbs-per-gallon, that suggests the hull interior foam was holding over 37.5-gallons of water. The volume of one gallon of water is 231-inches3, for a total of 8669-inches3 or about 5-feet3 volume. That is a cube of water 1.7-feet on a side or 20.5-inches on a side.
