Scepter-brand 5-gallon Gasoline Container Leak

If you have a Scepter brand plastic gasoline container I recommend you carefully inspect the seam joining the two halves. Ours started leaking at the bottom yesterday. I also recommend loosening the pour spout sufficiently to allow gasoline fumes to vent to avoid excess pressure.

Specifics on the container follow:

Brand: Scepter Manufacturing, LLC, Miami, OK 74354
Capacity: 5 Gallons
Bar Code: 87853 00003, P#00003, L#00031

I believe the container was purchased from Walmart about a year ago. I have not found a pressure relief device incorporated into the container. The temperature in our garage reaches about 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the tank was distended. It was a slow leak and only little fuel was lost.

The garage reeked of gasoline when I entered. My immediate concern was to ventilate the garage to prevent a explosion. I disposed of the fuel by putting it in our vehicles although it was non-ethanol.

I will be looking for a small outdoor storage shed for gasoline storage. It's hurricane season here and we like to keep three 5-gallon containers full for emergencies. I would also to find three new steel "Jerry" cans to store our gasoline.

Butch, "Jerry" cans should be avoided as they pour like crap. The spouts that you can buy leak almost as much while pouring.

Find a Rural King or Tractor Supply store. They will have proper 5-gallon steel cans with a safety cap and funnel spout for about $40.

If there is no Rural King store, buy one online from Graingers.

I will add a pic later.

Thank you for the tip. We have a Tractor Supply store so I'll check that out.

Butch -

While at Tractor supply, get a replacement cap that has a manual vent. The new vented caps are crap.

Tractor Supply has a 5 gallon "Jerry Can" style metal gasoline container made by Midwest Can and various replacement spouts. Price is $50 for the can. Is this the container you were thinking of?

The only brand can I have ever seen around here is called BLITZ. I have some that are decades old with no problems. I agree the new push-to-vent systems really are horrible.

Thanks for the photograph. That's very helpful.

I was pleasantly surprised that our Gulf Shores Public Works accepted the leaking gasoline container at their recycling center.
