1988 OUTRAGE 20 Whaler Drive

Postby roundle1979 » Sat Jun 22, 2019 4:44 pm

Hi All. I may buy a 1988 Outrage 20 Whaler Drive. If I buy, it will primarily be used for cruising around Long Island sound. Prior to purchase, I am having a survey performed; details about that to follow.

Q1: what'is the best stern seat option for an 1988 OUTRAGE 20 Whaler Drive?

Q2: is there away to create a bow filler cushion for an OUTRAGE 20? I suppose it's similar to 22 Outrage 22.

Q3: the dimensions [of the OUTRAGE 20] seem very similar to the Outrage 22. What is the major difference between an OUTRAGE 22 and an OUTRAGE 20 Whaler Drive?

Q4: will I regret not getting a 22?

Q5: this OUTRAGE 20 WHALER DRIVE boat currently has a 2005 Johnson 175. When it comes time to re-power, would you advise against a Yamaha 250? I believe that max power is 280-HP.

Thanks—Mike

A1: the wrap around OEM stern seat is a nice option.

A2: the bow area should be the same size on both.

A3: the only dimension that differs is the 2-feet of hull length added in the 22, and, of course, one boat has a notched transom and one has a Whaler Drive.

A4: to know this answer is difficult. I have a Whaler Drive boat, and I like the closed transom, the aft storage space, and the ride characteristics of the Whaler Drive—it rides like a Cadillac Brougham.

A5: with 250-HP the boat will be very well powered, but Whaler Drive boats generally are not fast boats. If you got a 200-HP the boat should run 45-MPH. More horsepower always costs more money. You might get 3 to 5-MPH more with the 250.

Q1A: where is the best place to purchase [a wrap around stern seat] these days?

Q2A: [the forward part of the cockpit of a 20 or 22-foot OUTRAGE] does not seem to accommodate a sun-pad-type filler. Is there a after-market solution?

Comment 4: I do like the look of the closed transom as well.

Comment 5: The 20 Outrage was rated for 200 while the 20 Outrage WD is rated for 280. Seems like a big jump. I certainly like the idea of having a 50MPH boat.

Advice on recommended sources for OEM parts like seats and upholstery is given in REFERENCE.

To create a level deck ahead of the center console, a wooden filler panel is fabricated, usually from fine marine boards of teak. See the recommended vendors mentioned above.
