160 DAUNTLESS OUTRAGE 17II GUARDIAN 18

Postby Reluctant » Fri Sep 20, 2019 4:26 pm

I have come forward for advice from continuouswave

First off, I know the 160 DAUNTLESS, the OUTRAGE 17 II, and the GUARDIAN 18 are all completely different boats.

About a year ago I ran into an old timer with a 1998 OUTRAGE 17II. At the time I was looking to upgrade from my DAUNTLESS 15. I’ve always wanted an OUTRAGE 17 II, and that’s the only one I’ve seen on Oahu. He’s ready to sell. The boat is beautiful and he claims that it has 130-hours on the hull with 54-hours coming on its 2012 130 E-TEC. Also it has a little kicker I’d probably sell. Would also need a Bimini or T-top. He’s asking $28,000.

After not being able to find a suitable smaller OUTRAGE, I settled on the 160 DAUNTLESS after selling the DAUNTLESS 15 and finding a good deal on the 160 DAUNTLESS. It’s a 2002 so no notch, and it is powered by 2000 Yamaha F100.

I found a GUARDIAN 18 with a Honda 135-HP, but it’s in CAlifornia, and I’d like it here in Hawaii. Boat’s asking price is $18,500 and shipping would run $5,000.

I spearfish out of my boat which includes two other adults and all of our gear (guessing 150-lbs). Depending on what we catch, that’s another 0 to 100-lbs.

I take pretty far treks that include going to Molokai, that’s roughly 30 miles away plus wherever we go after getting there. Sometimes I go 30 miles offshore out into the big blue. Yes, this happens in my 160 DAUNTLESS weather permitting. Now I’m not sure if it’s the Two-foot-itis, or rational thought, but I feel my 160 DAUNTLESS is a bit underpowered for the task and going slightly bigger would be more comfortable and have roughly the same fuel economy.

The OUTRAGE 17II is 1700-lbs dry and I’m guessing the GUARDIAN 18 is that or a little less. A 160 DAUNTLESS is 1350-lbs. Lengths range a bit more.

160 DAUNTLESS = 16’1”
OUTRAGE 17II = 17’6”
GUARDIAN 18 = 18’10”.

Which would you pick and why?

I like the OUTRAGE 17 II. It is local to you. It has a modern engine. You always wanted one.

Since you make fairly long runs, is there any meaningful difference in fuel capacity? Engine efficiency? The other thing I would consider strongly is the layout. Does the [GUARDIAN] have a dive door? I’ve never seen a [GUARDIAN\ but I understand they are more customized so the layout could be really good for diving. Also, that’s a lot of gear and sharp objects. The [GUARDIAN] is larger but not sure if it’s got more working room on deck. You’ll have to “live” with the boat, the motor can change. For the price you can look at getting a newer engine on the Guardian. People want a lot more for them down here in hot humid Texas. Closer to $30,000 though not sure if they actually get that.

But, as Jim says, you’ve always wanted the Outrage II. She’s right there--beautiful--perfect. You know the owner and how he cared for her. Sounds like he likes you. You’re like the son or grandson he never had. He’d be proud if you bought her. No worries about shipping or problems you might find and then you’re stuck thousands of miles away from the seller.

You got along fine with a Dauntless 15 and then 16, so a 17’6” is going to be more than fine. The Outrage II belongs in Hawaii and she’s been there in front of you dancing on the water. She needs an owner like you who will appreciate her. And what if, God forbid, some haole clown bought her and didn’t take care of her. Or worse, tied her up and didn’t take her out except for cocktails!.

The Outrage--every day and twice on Sunday. If you don’t, the Menehune will play havoc with the Guardian and you’ll never be sorrier.

Boat prices in CA are a bit over the top. The Guardian 18 is a bit underpowered. The shipping makes it totally impractical.

I know a Outrage 17 II owner in Hawaii (not sure which island) and he loves his.

Phil I agree but isn't the 18 rated for 150hp?

Nick - Yes, the Outrage 18 has a maximum hp rating of 150. Keep in mind the Guardian 18 is a bit heavier.

While I know there are members with a Outrage 18's with 115hp off California I think there will be moments when you will want the torque/displacement of a 150hp.

Just one person's opinion.

I have a F115 on mine and honestly it is not a bad performer, probably better than my Banana 19 w/115. I agree on needing more however but not sure that a 135 vs 150 would be too much difference.

What year is the Guardian? Dry weight on a Classic Outrage 18 is 1250 lbs and a Guardian the same year has a dry weight of 1750 lbs, according to this site and they have the same Hull dimensions. They are both rated for max 150 hp. My Guardian was powered by a 140 hp old Evinrude, my same hull Outrage 18 is powered by a 130 hp Honda (as shown in my signature). I considered the Guardian underpowered with the old 140 due to that extra weight you are starting out with 500 lb heavier boat. You’d likely want to repower if you are using that boat in big water. My 130 Honda is great on the lighter Outrage.

IMHO the Guardian should have been rated at max 175 or even 200? By comparison, my 87 Montauk 17 was rated at a max of 90hp and dry weight on it was 950 lbs, going up to the Outrage 18 at 1250, max hp went up 60 hp for the extra 300 lbs.

Good info. and good to know as my 19 Banana Revenge was I think listed at 1650. I have also read that the 18' OR may be understated in HP. Lastly the classic Montauk is rated at 100hp so 50hp for an extra 300lbs.
