HMCS St. John's Frigate

Postby floater » Wed Oct 30, 2019 8:19 am

I was out salmon fishing on Monday and I saw the HMCS St. John's cruise by. Had to go in for a look and some pics. The Revenge sure looks small next to it!

I don't see any picket boats maintaining a defensive perimeter around that modern warship--unlike in the USA.

Halifax harbor looks like its skyline is getting taller. I was last there in 1997. At that time there was a very old, very small Corvette-class c.1930 ship open for visiting. I thought: Oh man, I would not want to be in a North Atlantic storm in this little ship. They were used as convoy escorts in World War Two.

The HMCS ST. JOHN'S looks very impressive.

The Canadian Coast Guard, which is not part of Canadian Forces and not a military organization, has some rather big ships on the Great Lakes. Here is one I came across in Sarnia a few years ago:

The CCGS PRIVATE ROBERTSON V.C. was the first ship of the 140-foot Hero-class patrol vessels. The "V.C" in the ship name refers to the ship's namesake, Canadian Infantry Private James Peter Robinson, who was posthumously awarded the (British) Victoria Cross in 1918 for heroic action in World War I.

I was most impressed with the array of radio antennas on that tall mast. I am not sure what it will be patrolling for on the Great Lakes, maybe poachers from the USA coming across the border to fish in Canadian water.

That is the Toronto Inner Harbor. Well over 120 Cranes in Operation now. Way too many Condos going up. Soon you won't be able to see the Lake from the north part of the City.

Thanks for identifying the location of the harbor where the picture was taken. I had assumed it was Halifax based on Halifax being the home port of the HMCS ST. JOHN'S and no identification having been given of the location.

Let's turn to the boat and the person in the foreground:

Who is that seen in the REVENGE?

What length is the REVENGE?

Re Toronto: we have visited Toronto several times. It has really become a megalopolis. No matter what day of the week or time of day I have tried to drive across the 401 through Toronto, there is always a traffic jam. I've never gotten out on the water in the harbor.

That would be me in my 1988 Revenge 20 WT. I tossed my phone to a guy in a zodiac to get a pic of the two boats together. My Revenge is rigged for Salmon fishing Lake Ontario.
