220 Outrage as upgrade from DAUNTLESS 17

Postby dfclimber » Fri Mar 04, 2016 2:13 pm

In regard to the Boston Whaler 220 Outrage: I currently have a 1997 DAUNTLESS 17 dual-console, essentially 1997 Outrage hull and pre-Ventura, The family is out-growing this boat. [We are] looking for a boat with more capacity and open water capability.

[Give me your] thought and advice on a gently-used 2012 or 2013 220 Outrage with a low-hour VERADO 250. We would use the boat [half the time for] family cruising, beaching, and tubing, and the rest of the time for near-shore two-mile to 15-mile out fishing around Buzzards Bay.

I am guessing the newer DAUNTLESS hulls are better for the skiing, tubing, and beaching, but my wife only wants something with more freeboard than our current boat. The current Dauntless has [low] freeboard. We were previously looking at dual console 210 VENTURA or a VANTAGE--too nice and too many dollars--but have now decided to consider center consoles

Does anyone have any input on the [Boston Whaler 220 OUTRAGE] boat as a family boat [for the] intended use as noted above? Thanks in advance.

The next boat down on our list is a Robalo 222 with Yamaha 250.

Going to a 22-foot boat from a 17-foot boat will be a big upgrade in comfort and ride. I suspect that your wife's preference for a boat with higher freeboard is probably related to her impression of the safety of being in the boat in conditions with some wave action. I think the 220 OUTRAGE should assuage her concerns.

The 220 is very family friendly and handles the chop better than the dauntless. The top end with the 250 is in the low 40's but it's plenty of power.
Have a 2010 w/ 250 Verado with about 120 hours, so a little familiar with the boat. I really like it and great with 4-6 folks on board.
