Suzuki DF140BG

Postby jimh » Fri Oct 02, 2020 12:24 pm

Suzuki has introduced a new 140-HP engine with model designation DF140BG. The 140-HP engine has been Suzuki’s most popular selling model. This new DF140BG builds on that legacy with several enhanced features.

Most significantly the DF140BG uses electrical throttle and shift controls presumably using a digital data link between engine and remote controls. Suzuki uses the branding “Drive by Wire” for this feature. Drive by Wire has been available on Suzuki outboard engines in higher horsepower ranges, and it is now offered in the 140-HP engine for the first time.

Suzuki also has increased the battery charger output current to 40-Amperes to reflect the increasing electrical loads on the engine battery in modern boats.

The two-liter in-line four-cylindrical engine compression ratio has been increased to 10.6-to-1 to boost thermal efficiency and permit more power output. Suzuki also states in actual comparison testing with the older model, the DF140BG improves fuel efficiency by a modest five to seven percent.

The cowling styling has been slightly redone.

The new model DF140BG will be in production in Fall 2020, and the engine should be available in 2021. The prior model DF140A is still available.

In the future mentions of a Suzuki 140-HP engine will need to clearly indicate the full model designation to avoid confusion about which model is being referenced.

Suzuki is also introducing a model DF115BG with similar enhancements compared to the current model DF115A engine.

Any ideas as to why the BG code? Does it stand for something other than B following the letter A?

Another improvement in the DF140BG and DF115BG models: better engine oil sump and oil filter draining when changing engine oil to reduce spilling. Now only the upper engine cover needs to be removed for access to the oil filter.

An owner of a Suzuki DF115A recently commented to me that the engine had been perfect, and the only problem was the oil filter changing. Removal of the lower engine cover was necessary. It sounds like Suzuki has fixed that problem.

To remove the lower cowl [to change the oil filter] on a DF140A or DF115A is a bit of a pain; there are four screws.

But removing the lower cowl does give one access to look at the entire engine, and to possibly wipe it down with corrosion spray.

To remove the lower cowl once per season is not a deal-breaker.

CON--I think it will be light enough to fit on the transom of your OUTRAGE 18.

UPDATE: So far, all I can find regarding engine weight of the DF140BG is a mention that it will weigh 13-lbs more than a DF140A. The weight of a DF140A is believed to be 394-lbs (20-inch shaft) or 405-lbs (25-inch shaft). That suggests the weight of the DF140BG will be 407-lbs or 418-lbs.

PHIL--I believe that Suzuki already had a model DF140B, which I infer must have been a slightly improved model of the DF140A, as they appear to both have the same weight and other specifications. The suffix G as in DF140BG would then be reasonable to infer as indicating a variation of the DF140B with the new Drive-by-Wire electrical digital remote controls.

Unfortunately there is no really switched-on Suzuki dealer around me to inquire with to find a better explanation.
