1990 OUTRAGE 19 Purchase

Postby jsuisman » Wed Nov 04, 2020 11:28 am

Hey Everybody. I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself and my new Boston Whaler boat.

ABOUT ME
I currently reside in Newport, Rhode Island. I grew up on the Connecticut shoreline with an early c.1980 MONTAUK 17. I've mostly been sailing in recent years, but I love angling for stripers around Newport. I'd say I'm mechanically inclined, but don't have any experience working on boats besides doing bottom painting during a summer when I was 16-years-old. I am happy to be here on this forum and ecstatic to be a Boston Whaler boat owner again.

ABOUT THE BOAT
I recently purchased a 1990 19 Outrage with a 1998 Johnson 150--the price was right. The hull seems like it's in good shape for 30-years-old. The gel coat may need work, but [there are] no soft spots (that my non-expert buddy could find via the tap method). Electricals, the lamps, and the VHF Marine Band radio work.

ABOUT THE ENGINE
The 1998 Johnson 150 engine needs some unspecified work according to previous owner. It ran this summer when it was in the water, but stopped running at the end of summer. Right now, I'm working on finding an outboard mechanic to take a look at the engine to see if it's worth fixing or if I'll need to re-power over the winter. Not an easy proposition this time of year since they all seem swamped with winterizations.

After the engine is repaired or replaced, I will look at other projects.

Hello JARRED. Your 1990 OUTRAGE 19 is a very interesting boat. I have seen several other OUTRAGE 19 boats. The ones I have seen have a hull gel coat color of white or a very neutral near white, and the interior deck, cockpit, and console are definitely a gray hue. Also the design of the center console is quite different on the OUTRAGE 19 boats I have seen; the center console has an accordian folding roll-up door over the instrument area.

Your 1990 OUTRAGE 19 seem to have a Desert Tan hull and interior, and the center console is quite different. Just for a comparison, I include a photo I took recently of another OUTRAGE 19 boat.

Can you share the hull's HIN number to verify the date of production and model year? We just need the BWC...then the trailer four characters. (Or just send the HIN to me via PM and I will decode it but keep it private.)

That 1998 Johnson Ocean Pro 150-HP engine is built on a great V6 block with 2.6-liter displacement, loop charged combustion chambers, unusual reed valve location, and beautiful lost-foam castings. I think that design is perhaps the best OMC engine ever made. Unless there was some sort of catastrophic damage to the cylinders, pistons, rods, and crankshaft, I would anticipate that repair of the engine would be preferred rather than discarding it. Around that time OMC also introduced a new spark ignition control system that relied on an optical sensor, called OIS 2000. That system can be a bit unusual and strange to a mechanic who was not an OMC-factory trained mechanic. If the engine is a 1998, it is probably too early for that feature, and it would typically use a device called a PowerPack for ignition. (Those are somewhat known for needing replacement, if there are any problems with the spark ignition.) Old OMC engines like this one can run forever as long as they get good fuel, good oil, and proper care; they were the premium outboard of that era.

Since the engine is eight years newer than the hull, I would infer that the boat was re-powered at least once since new.

One other comment: the location of the VHF Marine Band radio antenna as seen in Figure 2 is awful. The antenna should be mounted higher and the exposed metal whip should not be able to be easily grabbed by anyone.

In general, the demand for good-condition OUTRAGE 18 and OUTRAGE 19 boats continues to be very strong. If "the price was right" you have bought a highly desirable model.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the reply with info about the boat and motor. The HIN from previous reg and bill of sale is: BWC*****L990. I will head over to the boat later today and confirm this matches the HIN plate on the boat.

I do have a picture of the plate from the motor and can confirm it's 1998.

Does that say 1999 model year?

In 1990, Whaler installed a taller console in the Outrage 18 and renamed it Outrage 19. This same console was installed on the new addition to the Outrage family, the Outrage 17. The gelcoat was desert tan inside and out.

This taller console was offered in 1990 and 1991 on the Outrage 19.

Jim's photo shows the 1993-1995 Outrage 19II. It kept the same exterior hull design as the Outrage 18/19 and included a redesign and added liner. It offered an integrated seat and folding console.

Re the engine tag: you can decode OMC model numbers using my article in REFERENCE. See

Evinrude-Johnson Model Codes
http://continuouswave.com/whaler/refere ... Codes.html

J150EXECD decodes as follows:
    J = Johnson
    150 = Horsepower
    E = Electric start with remote steering
    X = 25-inch shaft length
    EC = model year as 1998
    D = fourth production sequence of A, B, C, D and so on

The POWER rating of 111-kW converts to 148.85-HP. The production date is in clear text and was September 1998.

Re the HIN as BWCnnnnnL990 decodes as follows:

    BWC = MIC for Boston Whaler
    nnnnn = five character production sequence ID; see below for more detail
    L = month of production was December
    9 = year of production was 1989
    90 = model year was 1990

Since the boat is well identified as an OUTRAGE 18 or 19 model, the five character production sequence will be somewhere in the range of 6000A to 7999E. The requirement for these five characters is that they must be letters of the English alphabet, or Arabic numerals, or both, except the letters I, O, and Q.

Thank you jimh and Phil T for the info about the boat. Great to have the year of both boat and motor confirmed.

It looks like it will be a few weeks until I can get the motor into a shop.

Jim--Build date of September 1998 makes [the engine] a 1999. I could not read where it says it conforms to model year emissions.

NICK--I presume you are talking about the Johnson outboard engine with model number J150EXECD. For OMC engines the model year is encoded in the model number, and in this case, by the letters EC which decode to "98". See the article to which I have a hyperlink above. Further, since this particular engine was made on the fourth production run of this model, it seems quite reasonable that the fourth production run might have been in September. The changeover to 1990 model production may have occurred later.

I got you Jim, I use the same decoding for OMC. It just puzzles me that an engine made in 09/1998 would not be a 1999 model. I thought anything after 06/30 was a later model except for Yamaha and Mercury that no longer have designated model years.
