Evinrude Oceanrunner 200

Postby Waterfun » Wed Nov 16, 2016 11:45 am

Guys, Have heard some negative thoughts about this engine, pump going out, runs rich , sucks up the gas, mechanical failures.....etc.

Looking for some real life feedback from folks that have owned this engine...considering 1996 model for a boat and not sure of reliability and mechanical soundness.

It is what it is, a classic carbed two-stroke. It's going to be noisy, smelly, and use a lot of fuel compared to a modern fuel-injected motor, especially at slow speeds such as trolling. Other than the fact that it's 20 years old, there's no reason to expect any particular reliability problems. The good news is it's nothing terribly complicated (the controls are electrical/mechanical rather than computers) so it can be fixed by any shade tree mechanic. These older two-strokes are prized in remote parts of the world for just that reason.

You have maintenance to do on any outboard - periodically replacing the water pump and lower unit oil, for example. If it runs OK, and passes a compression check, that's about as much as you can do to verify its condition. If you want an efficient, more reliable motor, you'll need to start with something newer.
