Appraisal: C.1999 Yamaha F100 with Piston Damage

Postby Banks » Fri Feb 01, 2019 9:34 am

[What is the value of] a 1999 Yamaha F100 four-stroke-power-cycle outboard engine with about 300-hours in mainly freshwater that needs one of the pistons that left the engine replaced?

A 20-year-old non-running 100-HP engine is probably not worth a complete overhaul and repair. Its other parts may have some value as used parts, particularly if new parts for the engine are no longer available. The value cannot be known without seeing the engine, as the actual condition of the engine will be the greatest influence on value. I would take a complete in the dark guess and say it might be worth perhaps $500 as a parts-source.

Generally with any engine that is not in running condition, the value is related to two other values or costs:
--A, the value of the engine if it were in perfect condition and ready to run
--B, the cost to refurbish the engine into perfect condition from its present non-working condition

If B is greater than A, then the engine has little value in its present un-usable state, other than perhaps as a source of parts.
Success in realizing that residual value of the engine as source of parts depends on finding a buyer who wants those parts and is willing to buy the whole engine to get them.

I also infer from your inquiry that you have already determined that you do not wish to have the engine refurbished and would rather sell it as-in in the non-working condition. It that case, the engine as a non-working engine has really no value to you. Any value that you realize from the engine will be an improvement over retaining the engine that does not run and has no value to you.

Your description - One of the pistons left the engine? By this, do you mean one of the pistons exited the block?

If that's the case the motor is junk and not worth rebuilding. A new block is expensive and there could also be crank damage. The parts to repair cost more than the finished value. There's a running F100 on eBay for $2000.

If you are looking to sell it whole, I'd think you might get $500 - $800 for someone looking for donor parts - trim and lower unit, but it may take a while to sell.
