Appraisal: 1965 Teak RPS

Postby usaus » Mon Mar 22, 2021 5:39 pm

Looking for an appraisal value on an RPS seat from a 1965 16' whaler, I believe a Sakonnet. Located in Seattle, WA.

Evaluating options on a rebuild/restoration, and would like to know the value and demand if I were to sell to fund a different configuration.

Hinge hardware included. Seat is in solid sturdy condition, age appropriate wear, some evidence of moisture at the base, but not rotten.

Thank you in advance.

Specialty Marine fabricates new replacement parts for Boston Whaler boats, including mahogany parts. The Specialty Marine replica of the Reversible Pilot Seat (RPS) shown in your post has a list price of $1,241.00, not including any charge(s) for shipping and/or sales tax. The Specialty Marine website states their RPS has 5 coats of Z-Spar varnish and stainless steel hinges. Their RPS is also listed as "temporarily sold out". I'm not personally familiar with the quality of this company's work.

That may give you a reference point for establishing an asking price for a used original model, obviously taking into account any refinishing and/or repairs your RPS may need. A lot will depend on what a buyer is looking for (original vs. replica), what a buyer is willing to spend and the structural condition of the original. List it at a price you think is fair and see what kind of interest it draws.

By the way - with the current high prices for lumber of all kinds, it wouldn't be surprising if a replica RPS ordered today from the company mentioned above carries a higher price.

For another point of info, the company mentioned in the post above also has an unassembled, unfinished, do-it-yourself RPS kit for $909.00 plus whatever charge for shipping/tax.
